Finding/WTB 31-inch A/T tyres for 14 inch rim, any tips where to look?
Hi lads,
i currently have a set of 14 inch rims, fitted with 215/65 R14's, typically a falcon tyre. To finish off the ground clearance, i have been seriously
considering a set of 31's for a looooong time. I can't go any bigger because i have the long torsion bar covers on the rear.
I been browsing the web, and it seems near impossible to find a A/T tyre in goodyear, bridgestone, beaurepairs and bob jane web site catalogues for a
14inch rim. I have sent emails though and am waiting a reply.
I did find ONE, but was a 185/75 a/t or sumfin for a 14 inch  , not wide
enough for my rims.
was hoping for a 215 or 225, maybe even 235, and being 31 inch, i guess that makes it:
215/215 R14's
225/215 R14
or 235/215 R14.
Can anyone help me here?
Brand isn't a big issue, as long as its works, and preferably an intermediate range, as my jaw dropped at the prices of some of the 15inch and 16inch
31's lol, and i imagine the ducks nuts of A/ts would cost me a limb.

i don't think you'll find 31's for 14" rims hey.... the guy at the tyre shop told me over a year ago that they were phasing out 14" AT tyres
alltogether soon.

bugger! i will still keep my eyes open for the time being before i hit the market. i got 15 inch 5 studs but i'm 4 stud
These are good rims, because they are vw inner, ford outter steel and allow for 14 inch full size modern day hub caps. hub caps being fake modern day
bling at the fraction price of real alloys without the worry of breaking a brittle alloy wheel in the dirt. i like em. Sure it sounds gay, but this
offroader will also be a daily driver.
Cram, thanks for the offer, i am interested but am not willing to commit and throw an offer yet. i will keep it in mind. i looked at the BF website,
and they appear to be a 75 profile, giving me a 20 inch wheel... which is a small upgrade in height for me but i got a 2inch lift kit, and small tyres
might make it look goofy. i'm not sure yet...

Chris , get some 6 inch 15's for the back and run 235 x 75 which is 29 inch tyres then get some 4 1/2 inch type 3 rims for the front and run 185 x
75 on the front either that try and get 5 or 5 1/2 for the front and run 195 x 75 tyres which you can get like anthiron has on the front

i run my 195/80 r15's on the front on 4.5 inch rims, pretty sure my rears are 8 inch, and they are 235/75 r15, rear tyres are federal couragias, the
fronts are federals too but i cant think of the model.

Found something suitable. its not 31 inch, but approx 7 inch increase from what i already got (27 inch wheel).

in the long run youre going to want 15 inch rims, why not bite the bullet now and find some second hand wide steel rims? some were for sale on here
only 2 weeks or so ago. why waste your money on 14 inch tyres when youre gonna end up changing your mind anyway? you dont drive the car every day so
its not urgent.

I get a little carried away. That was the ONLY manufacturer i could find that does a 14 A/t, and they only had the one type. even the surbaru brumby
forums i came across were discussing the 'phase out' of the 14's

Yes, modern day hub caps on a Baja sure does sound gay 
Don't do it, please don't do it. It looks terrible. Just run the steel rim and paint it to look reasonable.
Ultimately, just bite the bullet and change to 15's.
I used to run 14's on the front. Here they are with some BFG all terrains. I had a 2inch lift kit at this stage;
You can still buy the 27x8.5R14 BFG All Terrain.

I remember when it used to look like that! sure has come a long way
chris the 27 8.5/14 is a great tyre, i used to run the nankang on the front. And would be a good compromise if you only have the 14's at the moment,
best thing when you decide to go bigger and get some 15's for the rear and run 31's. You can swap them to the front!

Yeah, the nankang super trippers i have them on the front of my baja 27 x 8.5 x 14. You can get them form a tyre shop in browns plains up here in
brisbane. I can't remember what the tyre shop was called though and it was a long time ago approx 2 yrs ish. It's on browns plains rd. the name for
it is in the off road section. under a thread called '14"offroad tyres available @' hope that helps. You are welcome to come and have a look at
mine on the front of my baja. I think they would be too small for the rear. Just my opinion. I will probably be putting 15's on the front of my baja
in a few months time so i may be selling mine if you want to wait??? not set in stone yet though. I am putting a 3" lift kit under mine so i think i
will need 15's. I will sell them for less than half the price of new ones and they are practically new. just a possibility.

i have also looked into the idea of new drums drilled to landcruiser 6 stud pattern. its $350 for both rear drums machined and studded from
J.P.Sherman at volks conversions.
i have a mate with about 100 sunraiser rims lying around in his back yard so the way i see it, either i go out and buy 15in 4 stud rims OR get the new
drums and free sunraisers. Then ive got a massive range of rims i can use after i hit the coffee rock on fraser!!

Strictly speaking you can only do a 2" lift in QLD legally.
But besides that all a lift kit does is unnecessarily raise the center of gravity of the car making the handling worse, so go as small as possible.
2" will give enough clearance everywhere for big tyres and to run a kombi gearbox in a variety of configurations.

The only reason i'm running the 3" lift kit is because it came on the pan i bought. I too think its a little excessive but i'm on a buget and
can't afford to get a 2" kit. If anyone want's to swap me a 2" lift kit for my 3" one i would be more than happy to.

Chris,
Check out the Maxxis website for different 14" tyres.

On the left there are quite a few different tyres that come in 14". I've called around all over and it's expensive Toyo M65's, the Nankangs, or
the various Maxxis.
I got a rough quote for Maxxis MT-753, in 195/R14 for $140 each, cheaper if you buy 5. A fairly aggressive tyre, but oterwise you can go the MA0751,
which is an AT and is a good price too.
Besides those, 14s are rare...

Some nice series there! Yea they are getting rare. I like the maxxis tread pattern, but the highest tyre in 14's appears to only be 27 inch...
I'm not sure how they would be for a nice bit of ground clearance compared to 31's... Otherwise i wouldn't hesitate.
Anyone got any pics of baja's or buggies fitted with 27's?

14 inch tyres are disappearing faster than 15 inch passenger size tyres...
many passenger size 14 inch tyres are now obsolete or going to vintage prices... like the 155 x 15 beetle tyres
and soon the 165 x 15 inch tyres...
You will probably need to find some 15 inch wheels...
then you can pick up used tyres off 4WDs , for free
as many are still good when thrown away , as a full set is purchased....

The biggest tyre for a 14" rim I've come across is 27". If you have to have a 31" tyre the only option is a 15" rim or larger I reckon.
If you go down the Maxxis track let me know how they go, I've heard lots of good resports, but not from VW owners...
