T34 ghia LHD to RHD conversion
Just wondering if anyone knows how hard and costly it is to convert a T34 Karmann Ghia from LHD to RHD.

I am actually looking to buy a t34, and was wondering if I should import a LHD and convert it, since there aren't that many around. I would prefer
one that doesn't need too much work but send me pics and details of yours and I'll consider buying it.

You don't need to convert it to rhd ,to get it rego , better to leave it in original condition .

Would prob cost about this much!
Hardest part would be finding the parts - RHD dash pads are like hens teeth - in fact finding ANY dash pads is a nightmare. Basically all Type 34
specific parts are not easy to come by, especially stuff like the steelwork for the dashboard. The only way you might be able to do it is either wait
a long long time to collect all of the parts (it would take years) - or simply pay premium prices for them (or buy rexy's of course)
Off top of my head...
Beam is stock type 3
Same as pedal assembly
Can reuse the steering column
Vent wing frame is threaded for mirror - and you only get one mirror so you need a RHD Drivers vent frame - or just use a non standard mirror.
Mirrors are also Type 34 specific as thread is very short (even convertible bug ones don't fit)
Got a feeling the fuel tank is different for RHD / LHD as it is clearanced for steering column.
Glovebox liners are hard to find (I have a repro one I will sell you, but the fit is shite - lol)
Wiring loom is different (wires will not reach gauges) so you will need a RHD front loom.
You may also need to relocate fuse box - depending on how much of dash you cut out and swap.
Front carpets are different - for pedals and steering column
Front pedal / foot plates are Type 34 specific (I think)
If you are taking all of the dash out you might as well overhaul the fresh air vents and windscreen wiper motor / mechanism so allow $$ for this
You will probably need to remove front screen for welding etc so factor in a front screen seal
You will also need to paint the dash and probably repaint the front vent panel.
Then you either need to pay someone to do the work - or do it yourself
(did you think I was kidding when I said $3500)
Just not really worth it in my opinion unless you can get a doner car for nothing, or you just want to do a hack job / custom job. But remembering
that even basket case Type 34's seem to be pulling cash these days you would have to be pretty lucky.
Mick.
