Paint matching - how close is it?

Hey there.
I have a few chips here and there that I need to fill.
The guy that i bought the car off doesn't remember the colour code - only that it was a House of Kolor - I think from memory.
It is a flat colour in Mint Green -
My question is how close can they get to matching colours really? Do I need to go to someone who does this brand etc etc - does anyone recommend anyone in Sydney for a match? Cheers Terry

be careful of autobarn.
Even when I gave em a colour code, with their rough mixing i still ended up with 3 different shades of yellow for a single previous project (since been rectified), but what a bloody mess.

without the code, they match it by eye as closest as possible with a collection of colour chips.

Surely though there must be a betta way. someone will have a suggestion here of a proper pro paint shop.

10% luck and 90% experience.

A real good painter experienced in colour matching will get close.

Take into consideration that old colours had huge amounts of lead oxides to make the pigments. some colours had up to 23% lead content. That gave the colour its strength. Lead is gone from paint now. The alternatives are not the same. It is like trying to compare steel to plastic. It can look the same sometimes, but it is totally different. The older colours had the high lead content and the exact same tinters are NOT AVAILABLE. That's it close or exact is not able to be an exact science.

Sorry to break the news, but that's the way it is.

Thanks guys. I will try my best and see what happens I suppose. I did hear that there are some machines that measure the colout intensity and match to a brand if you provide it. Not sure if this is fact or fiction - urban myth perhaps? Terry

they are called "spectros". What they do is read the paint from ur car and it will match to the closest formula it has, they can be quite good and they can be quite shit. They are an aid really. just another helping hand we have in the trade. By all means try one u mite get lucky but as Hellbus said u will struggle a bit casue of the lend not being there anymore.
