I need to change my beetle to NSW rego - can any one help on with what i have to do?
Hi every one,
I own got a 61 beetle that i want to change over to NSW rego, can any one tell help me with what i have to do to get it registered?

you will need to get a 'blue slip', which is a more thorough roadworthy inspection. You get a blue slip from a mechanic who is an Authorised
Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station (AUVIS). You can try the RTA website for an address http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au but the last time I looked, I couldn't find one.
The only place I know is Elio's on Henley Marine Drive in Haberfield.
The next thing you need is a green slip (compulsory third party insurance) - shop around for good prices, if you have your car insured try the same
company.
Once you have a blue slip and green slip, go to the RTA, fill in an application to register a motor vehicle, stand in line and pay some money and
you're done!

it's best to call first to make sure they have the time, as the blue slip takes a little longer - there's more paperwork to fill out, plus
they verify that the engine and chassis numbers match the paperwork.
the best things to check beforehand are:
tyres - must have good even tread (if the outside is wearing but the centre is good they will still fail.)
all external lights must work - park, low beam, high beam, brake lights and reverse lights
wipers and windscreen washers must work
horn must work
seatbelts must work (if inertia reel type) and must not be frayed.
front seats must not be loose
no big exhaust leaks
no major oil leaks
no major rust problems
if the car has been well maintained you shouldn't have to do too much
if the car doesn't pass first time they will give you a list of repairs that will need to be addressed and checked when you return to them, and
if it does fail they have to lodge the failed report to the RTA so that you can't just go somewhere else and try again - you have to get it
fixed.
there is no limit on the number of attempts, but it does cost you each time.
it is best to check your car before going because you will pay twice if you fail the first inspection, plus waste a bunch of time.
most places are pretty flexible, but you may find one that is very painfully particular. Elio's is pretty reasonable though, we've never had
any problems. They have also fixed things on the spot for us to get a car to pass.
the blue slip will cost you $44
is your current rego running out soon?

I would contact the RTA on there phone line, as you might not need to get a Blue slip cause the cars already registered in another state but i could
be wrong anyway give them a call and get the information first hand.

mmm, good point, worth a phone call just in case... but I'm pretty sure that all cars we've registered here from interstate, including those
with current interstate rego, have needed a blue slip

yep, you do need a blue slip, & make sure
you turn up for blueslip AND RTA, with ALL
proof of ownership, including the sales receipt from when you purchased & proof of identity etc |

If never had a problem finding someone for blue slips. Just drive past a few mechanics and you will find one with a blue sign about 2 foot square on
the front. If you're in country area it might be harder.

I rang my mechanic and told him I needed a Blue slip. He fixed everything necessary for it to pass and organised it through one of his mechanic
friends that does Blue slips. All done in 3 days, and no hassles. |
