I'm not up to date on these things, and the only one I've seen was the light blue incomplete one at the Nationals many years ago. Does
anyone feel that this is what this is really worth? Based on pure quality of the restoration [that motor looks very clean and original] and rarity, it
certainly seems to be around the right $ numbers.

I heard in Germany a few years back A$120,000 wouldn't be unusual.
My cousins ex lover in Austria has one in his lounge room as part of a large collection. |

So how many parts on a schwimmer are the same as a Beetle. The motor and front beam ?

Gary's car is the one that I restored over a period of about 15 years. This car was brought out to Oz by a Dutch immigrant in the 50's
& spent a bit of time around Cooma. I think it then went to Qld where someone converted it to RHD & got full rego for it. I bought it off a
guy in Paddington in about 1980 with Qld plates. To this guy's credit he contacted me about 2 years later to say he found the orig eng- it
didn't have a sump (corrosion) but it DID have the right prefix on the number!
Is the other one Ray Black's?? If so, it used to belong to Alan Hamilton the former Melb Porsche dealer. I don't know where he got it.
Re Beetle parts interchangeability, from the back of the nose cone of the rear trans towards the eng they are all beetle except the crank pulley is
doubled up (ie 2 belts) & has 3 pins to drive the prop thru the back of the tub via a flex coupling sliding along a splined shaft & a dog
"clutch". The rear trans also has a take-off driveshaft that then goes via a transfer box to the front trans.
The front trans is unique to the typ 166 although obviously some susp & brake bits are beetle.
When I pulled mine down, I found the teeth on the fr crown wheel were so worn & sharp I could have shaved with them! I thought I was perm. stuffed
or I would have a 2WD car!! It's a credit to German thoroughness that at a rally Europe, I met a kubel owner who worked at ZF. When I told him I
was in deep scheiss re the fr crownwheel & pinion (using very basic Deutsch & a translator) he said "No problem, we still have the specs
on our computer driven diff machine. During my lunch breaks, I will make 2-3 for you & pick the best one". When I got back home I sent him
500DM plus freight & I had a brand new front CW & pinion!
Re prices- there is I think a big gap bet what's asked & what's accepted. I probably could have got alot more for mine OS but it was
more important for me to keep it here.
