reason to carry an extinguisher ...


Hey all!
I just thought I'd post a pic to remind bus owners (well all VW owners really) why it is a good idea to carry a working fire extinguisher at ALL times. After all if it isnt your bus or bug, it might be someone elses pride and joy.

Well,
that's the first pic I've seen of a Kombi or Beetle that wasn't burnt right out...

it looks like this fire was extinguished...

NO fuel filters in the engine bay will stop many engine fires...

Fire Extinguishers should be mandatory in air cooled vehicles...

i few days ago i could smell petrol quite strong, so i checked the fuel lines, couldnt see anything obvious i parked my car (69 notch) with half a tank of juice, i got in it for work usual smell of fuel, and the gauge was below empty!! i went to work in the van
today i started the notch and there was a hole in the back of the pipe that feeds the left carb, i replaced the pipe, checked all the others, jumped in the car and the gauge now shows 1/4+ of fuel!! did my car somehow "tell" me not to drive it to work? did a higher power stop a very nasty situation? or was it coincidence??? what ever it was at least i didnt end up like that kamper!

Keep throwing a pair of dice and eventually double 1 'snakes eyes' will come up.

Keep driving a Beetle with a plastic fuel filter in the engine bay and eventually a fire could start.

Just a simple risk.

Everything in the Kombi was buggered ...the visors had melted to thefront seat frames, The interior was a total mess. It was salvaged for the gearbox and the front end. I think the rest was scrapped .... :(

naah the box was ok ...... melted all the alloy on the block and the timeware was all warped, but the majority of the flames came from the bed and timber in the cupboard of the kamper. the box ended up in a baja, and prolly still is to this day ....

fuel lines and pumps that toss out the brass piping fuel filters in the engine bay usually over the dissy old fuel lines the list goes on but not many take any notice.
new fuel lines about $4.oo a meter filter move 15 minets hose clamps $5-6.00

At the moment i have
a fuel pump with bad brass pipes
no fuel filter at all
original fuel lines
and a fire extinguisher.

That will change very soon,when i get my new fuel pump,new lines,a fuel filter in the front and clamps to fit.

I hate seeing these pictures and knowing how i long i have been driving my beetle with these things just hanging on.:!:

I replace all rubber fuel hoses regularly ( bi-annual) and fit clamps with safety wire in case the fittings come loose. I replace the fuel filter every second oil change (once a year). The filter is located under the car away from potential ignition sources. Don't forget the rubber grommetts were the fuel line passes through the shroud. I also carry an extinghuisher in my other car in case I meet a burning vw.
