Well what a fun Day !!!!!
Armed with my 1916cc Hillclimb car, sporting a stock Type 3 gearbox, this was my first stab at the supersprint races for this year.
Well there was a few V8's that went home with their tail between their legs, to say the least.
The event was run by the "NSW road racing club" which comprises of members who do race for "sheep stations" (if you know what I
mean!) and was a fun event. The racing format was 4 flying laps of the south circuit at Oran park, starting on the grid with a "standing
Start".
I thought this may have been a disadvantage with the stock diff, but after slowly feeding the power on in first gear, the 260KW BA XR8 I was lined up
against, thought differently !!!
Into the first corner with a several car lead, not bad for a 1/8 mile or so straight !
The car went well considering I was on 60 series rubber on widen 14inch steel rims, and the type 3 brakes certainly had a workout.
Temperatures ran well all day, considering I was lapping consistantly in the low 54's , 54.07 the fastest run on the day. The stock gearing (3.8
diff) was OK, although the lack of the Quaife meant that I was wheel spinning around most corners and with any "role on" of power.
Sub 55's On my first run around Oran Park, I can live with that !:thumb

Well done Craig, I hope that u enjoyed yourself. It was nice cold weather on the weekend as well, perfect for air cooled engines. Did they put u in 2E
class? I would expect u to win your class, especially with those times.
Was Rudy there in his L-Bug? he normally runs around the 52second mark.
Hope u can come to Wakefield Park to scare some Porsches.
regards
Jak
Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!

Won the class, although I was really there to research gearing, suspension etc for my other car! (not that I did this !!) It felt like I was driving an
auto, as I could do the whole track in Third gear !!!! Over 7500 rpm down the straight ! (although 1 fanbelt didn't like this with the stock
pulley, oops there it goes ! ) So after that I changed into fourth at
7000.
Rudy and John were both there, sharing Rudy's car. I think Rudy may have gone as low as a 51 something ?? or a very low 52 ?
John was lapping in the low 55's, to achieve a 2nd in class behind Rudy's 1st place
Will have to miss the next Porsche day , I have tickets that weekend to "MAMA MIA" and a dirty weekend staying in the city
So Nambucca will have to do for the next Hooon !

Sounds interesting, seems like you guys have alot more circuit racing events than we do here in the UK! Well dont Craig keeping the VW's up there
and wiping the smiles off some of the V8 boys no doubt
Are there any more details or pictures from the event? Or any other events like it?
Cheers,
Rob.

Hi
Well done Craig, you might have to put in a 1300 box like CT & Jak, my neighbours nephew may have been out there in his Civic, I hope he got a
good eyefull, he laughed when I said I was going to take my bug out for a run.

should be aiming for. Cheers, Keith.

Craig, Unfortunately not many people are into the circuit racing over here so there aren't really any that are setup for going round corners too
well.
One of my mate tho is building a bug to be a track car and is playing with a few idea's on suspensions setups etc, I will let you guys know any
developments!

Rudy Frank's fastest was a blistering 51.25 !!!!
Results are on the net.

I know exactly what you mean. I have had problems with them at huntley. Big arguments between a mirage and an excel even. Arguments over broken
headlights. "he cant run in this class, its road registered, cant get rego with broken headlight...." "so what if my tyres are 45
series, the engine is standard Im in type 2" they have nearly come to blows. All for a $15 piece of plastic. Amazing.

I had a similar experience a few years ago, I won my class , can't remember what it was, then the organiser called me at work & said that I
had been disqualified since all the MX5 guys had protested that my car had non-factory body parts, ie: the rear wing.
I said, these are the same guys that trailered their cars to the track, run slicks & use Avgas? yet I drive to the track, had second hand street
tyres & used super from the pump?
The organiser apologised many times to me so I missed out on a little trophy.
My world collapsed!! (LOL) I hop the MX5 driver that got second is proudly showing his trophy on his mantle peice!
Thats why I joined the porsche club, the people are very proffessional, no-one cares who's quickest, & I love being surrounded by Porsches.
Whats better than that?
Jak

Rudy has a 1916cc engine (94x69). Carbies are 44IDF's , heads are street eliminators(I think), rockers are standard VW,cam is a Stan Pobjoy spec
37/68 cam, crank is a Stan Pobjoy Counterweighted (standard stroke), Conrods are standard VW, 30mm oil pump, standard oil cooler, and merged exhaust.
009 dizzy and Holley blue electric fuel pump.
The motor is very close to a Pobjoy "Steriods", with Stan doing all the machining for Rudy . Rudy is a qualified mechanic , so he puts it
all together himself.
It runs on pump premium unleaded, which is claimed to be 98 octane !
The car is a Superbug , with all the interior removed, replaced with a race seat and cage !
The brakes are type 3 discs and rear drums, and the suspension is modified superbug, but still remains IRS and Strut front.(T3 torsion bars, whiteline
swaybars,lowered etc)
Tyres are racing slicks on very wide rims !!
To the untrained eye the car actually looks light, but it still weighs in at well over 800Kg!
I hope this helps Rob:thumb

The heads are CB Performance CNC 044 jobies with the manifolds to match, & it doesn't run on pump gas, it runs on the race gas u get from
BP.

Ummm No, it was running Shell Optimax from the "pump" (98 octane), premium unleaded, the same fuel I was using.

Sorry Craig, but u have been misled, it's race fuel u get from BP, $50 for 20litres when u show your cams license.
But I can only go on what I have been told, I don't test peoples fuel & it's none of my buisness what cocktail they use.
Lucky this isn't an IQ test!

Jak, my advice would be for you to speak to the owner of the car, like I have done, as well as the second driver, if you feel you are unable to trust
my posts. :thumb
You will then need to correct your posts, unless you then doubt the owner, in which case we will all go to the Petrol station together, buy some more
Optimax, and race !
And YES, I have had my fuel tested in the past by CAMS, because another competitor didn't believe the performance the 1916cc could produce , with
the results confirming "pump" fuel.
P.S The compression ratio of Rudy Franks engine, as per the owner, is below 9.5:1, not exactly race fuel territory.
Hyundia Accent compression ratio= 10.0:1 , fuel requirement= Standard unleaded petrol

Thanks Profffesssor Torrens. I thought I had talked to the owner the co-driver, their names are Phil & Neville right.? They drive a swing axle 76
beetle? I may have my wires crossed, my apologies Craig.
I'm so glad that I don't have a race car, I wouldn't want them to test my fuel that I need for the 20:1 compression that I run, but
quiet, don't tell anyone, only me & the builder (thats me) know the specs.
Have fun at Raleigh Craig

Hang on Craig, 9.5:1 compression, surely there must be some mistake, how do explain the 300degree head temps at Oran Park? or were u just telling
fibs? Did u get a spec sheet when u purchased your engine or is it all top secret?
I'm running 9.0:1 compression & I rarely go over 120degrees on the track & 80degrees on the street, I'd check where u have your
sender, or it could be those street eliminators, thats why no-one that does track uses them?
Just a thought.

Jak
