What's the best engine sound ever?

This is a kind of pointless topic to help me make it through seemingly endless crap to the weekend.

I read somewhere that there will most likely be some regulations about the minimum amount of noise that an electric vehicle is required to make. Since we'll all be driving electric cars one day I foresee that there will be various sounds downloadable for your car like ring tones for your phone. The article suggested Star-wars sounds. Which would be cool, but not necessarily what you'd like to hear all day while driving. I'd rather listen to the sound of a 356 Carrera....or maybe....Cizeta v16T....or maybe...Alfa GTV6....or...BRM H16

Is there something better?

Many years a go a friend had a recording of old Grand Prix and US track racing cars.

My favourite was the sound of one of the Bentley Boys in a 4 1/2 litre Blower Bentley being chased down the Mulsanne Straight during the Le Mans 24 Hour Race by Nuvolari in a Bugatti.

It sort of went a bass BBRRRRRR!!!!!!! and high pitched NNNNNAAAAAAARRRRR!!!!!!

The thought of it still puts goose bumps on me.

The best soundingto me is probably a turbo rotarty bouncing off the rev limiter with a straight through exhaust system.

Or a bigger than 2 litre beetle motor with a lumpy as f*** cam sitting at idle.

I saw - and heard - a 16 cylinder (H16) BRM at Bathurst many years ago, and don't think I've heard anything better since.

I have fond memories of 6ltr and unlimited V8 carburetted race boats --while an apprentice-- and running/tuning/racing them on the Hawkesbury and Georges rivers.

They'd "crack" when on-song while spinning constantly around 7000 rpm, indicating the magic 600 - 700 bhp goal for a N/A engines in those days (early eighties).

Aaaah...memories. :starhit:

A Bugatti Type 35 at full song - all 2.0 litres of it, with ball-bearing mains allowing 6000 rpm - has a sound like amplified tearing calico. Absolutely rivetting.

i agree with Joel, except for the subie sound, its not bad, but i dont know, just doesnt do it for me..... the crisp and healthy v8 is my fave by far, especially a blown hemi or the old holden 5ltr when worked properly and stroked to 355.... and as for the the flat 12 ferrari engine, its brilliant but the 6.0ltr V12 aston martin engine definitely gives the ferrari a run for its money and if fuel injection isnt your style, the v12 from the old jag e-type had a really nice and raspy note to it.... cheers adam

Biased I know but an early 911 flat 6 sounds pretty sweet I reckon.

Non car would be a Rolls Royce Merlin Mustang/Spitfire engine. One at the air port near where I live an it sounds sweet when diving down fast and then pulling up.

As this doesn't say what sort of engine, how about this.

Until recently, when he gifted the plane to the Aircraft Museum at Nowra ,Laurie Ogle owned and restored a 1937 Lockheed Electra. It has 2 Pratt & Whitney 9 cylinder radial engines, and seats 10. I was fortunate enough to be on a flight to Bendigo (for the swap-meet) with Laurie and some other friends in 1992. What a flight!

When it was time to get back to the Bendigo airstrip, Laurie 'Buzzed' the showground (swap-meet) in the Electra to let us know. I've never seen so many people look up at one time and yell #%@* ! The plane was so low, you see the rivets in the aluminium panels.

That was spine-tingling stuff, and I will never forget that sound.

Cheers, Greg
