G'day All,
Could someone be able to fill me in on the above please, or point me toward a site that might answer all those sort of questions.

G'day

No such thing as a 1975 S bug

briefly

1972 - early 1973
Model 1302 or S bug
flat screen

late 1973 - 1975
Model 1303 or L bug
curved screen

1975 L bugs had rack and pinion steering and are more sought after

Ill stick my $0.02 in cos theres alot of confusion on this topic due to mainly them being called different names overseas and people who dont know bugs thinking standard 1300s are supers etc

in aus if its got struts its a "superbug"

if its 71-72 with the metal dash and flat windscreen its a superbug S.
Called a 1302 only in Europe not here

if its a 73-75 with the round elephants feet tail lights, curved windscreen and modern plastic dash its a superbug L, but have been commonly callled Lbugs here
these ones are a 1303 but again only in Europe.
US called all strut bugs Superbeetles regardless of which they were

76Lbugs dont exist, a few carry over 75s were sold new in 76 and maybe called a 76 but technically speaking are a 75.
Adding to the confusion was the 76 runout bug.
cos if i recall those were classed as a "76L" even though there a standard bug

but all were 1600 twin port with discs

only Europe got the 1200 and 1300 supers
class dismissed

Hi

Engine lids are interchangeable, so someone could have put a engine lid on with Volkswagen "S" instead of "L" causing confusion.

I've seen many beam bugs with S or L badges on them.

another good trick is the superbug lid on a standard but with the volkswagen badge swapped

I've been told more than once that a bug was an actual 1300 S or 1500 L

my mate has a 70' 1300 with a 4 vent lid and a '1300s' Badge, he said for years before i got my beetle that he had a "super beetle" when i became interested in bugs, then joined the forum... when i looked and checked, then told him he had a 1970 beam bug... 1300... he said 'nah, it's a super'...

anyway.

Is this going to turn into which is best? cause that can be solved very quickly, right guys?

interesting for a 1970 beam bug to have a 1300 engine,

Unless it was a replacement for an expired 1500 unit. definitely beam?

were the pov back after the 1500 series beam pans still bj beam front end? I was under the impression after the 1500's (besides 76' models) that torsion bar front ends were completely eliminated, and all became strut.

the last of the 1500s finished in early 71

i had a parts car 12/70 1500, it was a real bitsa bastard.

and that was just the mechnical side of things.
ive had a few 1300s, and they skimp anywhere they could

no window chrome, no door armrests, no gynecologist ankle stirrups in the back, rubber floor mats, no defrost fan etc

kinda funny people would go without that for sake of saving a few hundred bucks
