Looks nice never the less.

But then again the off the shelf price on a vdo speedo for example, here is more than that.

yeah I like the work i have done so far. Just waiting on the local engineer to make some spacer plate, which I will wrap around the tacho body to make spacer tubes. Then the spacer will slip inside the old speedo body.
The spacer will set the depth of the tacho /glass to ensure a tight fit between it and the inner black ring/chrome bezel.

Oh and i have to get the ring chromed. Also awaiting a member here for a donor clock or fuel gauge so i can nik the inner ring as the one i have is very pitted. The pitting is also sub surface which is very very difficult to fill properly.

So I opted for a better ring.

Then onto a mod/restro of the fuel gauge. I want to get a glass cut from real glass then get Dylan to paint the fuel markings on the gauge face itself. Eliminating the need for cutting slots in the glass for paint and beveling 45o so the optics
of the back light work. Just easier to paint the gauge face lol.

progress :tu:

the first pic is the exploded view on how it will go together. Its the bottom line up of parts. The tacho itself has had the glass and glass retainer ring sikaflexed to the plastic body
to make it a sealed unit. last remaining thing to get done for this gauge is a re-chrome of the bezel. Note in the 2nd pic the precision dept spacer I have made from 1.1mm steel sheet.

The speedo behind just needs the spacer to be ground down to precision dept and the speedo to be removed from the chrome bezel, filed down to correct diameter and that will be ready for assembly.

so you'll fit it in the speedo housing in the dash?

I retro-fitted the Australian gauges to my square -- it was quite the effort in rewiring...

yep that is correct. the speedo is the new tacho and the old clock is the new speedo. fuel gauge remains relatively stock expect for the plastic lens is now real glass and i will reproduce the fuel marking on the fuel gauge face itself
as I don't want the markings on the glass like previously

speedo finished, just needs a good wipe down to remove polyurethane and finger print marks.

:starhit: wow what a gorgeous piece of engineering. Very proud of this. Took me several weeks to build this. The longer the better.

Dude, that looks the GOODS. Top job!

Are there any issues with calibation? And I assume you need to use a Hall Effect sesnor (I think that's what they are called)?

its programmable. Either you enter the pulses per km if known or run the self calibration.

yes hall effect is correct.

One happy lil fuel gauge. Yes boys and girls, that is real glass

The fuel meter is out atm. The face of it is refinished and will be going off to get customized numbers and markings.
Also take note of my modified lamp block that goes on the back.(spot the difference from stock;)) Found out yesterday what I thought was an electrical problem is actually how VW designed the indicator makers on the gauge.
I was like"what the?" Germans did this? :no:The aussie 72 and 73 type 3s where the only ones with the correct wiring.
