Barn find fastback - what to pay??

Hi guys

On my travels today I noticed an old fastback tucked under the carport of an old weatherboard, half obscured by a bush, with two flat tyres. Pure barn find! Its a 1600 auto, and im assuming its very early 70s as it has the newer style front indicators.

It has its original B&W vic plates which is a bonus and given its been undercover for years its avoided the worst of the weather. I cant see much rust besides a 5c piece size spot under the rear window, and it is mainly surface. That said, I havent looked under the boot/bonnet yet.

Owner says last time he drove it (several years ago) it ran fine and its been parked up since.

The bad:

Its rough. The body seems prett straight but there are a few dings, and most of the rubbers are knackered. The dash pad is in good shape except for a massive split in the middle which I assume is courtesy of UV rays. Lenses are ok but a few are cracked, bumpers good, front badge missing, glass is good.

I havent looked under the carpet but I assume it could be harbouring rust...

Its straight, looks quite rust free, but it is quite rough!

What should I pay? I have seen 'decent' driveable cars for 2-3k so im guessing not much.

thanks

If there is rust showing, there is ten or twenty times more inside the panels.

To buy as a rough, unknown mechanically, unregistered vehicle. It is a desirable car. I would say no more than $500

Roger that

Im thinking the real item of value for me is the original rego plates! If I can pick it up for a few hundred, I will likely clean it up as best I can and on-sell it. Not looking to profit massively, it would just be cool to salvage a 'barn find' and have a bit of fun!

Sorry no pics - its really wedged in under the carport, and it would have to be dragged out to take decent pics.

They rust internally/invisibly?

All cars rust from the inside out. Even aluminium panel cars corrode.

It starts from when the steel sheet is made, before the panels are pressed.

The steel has to be bare to electric resistance spot weld the car together.

ok thanks

so it would be a good pickup for $300 or so, even if it just meant relisting on ebay as a parts car?

Hey mate i would be keen if the car was complete. I am looking for a project fastback to do up as a daily driver or one that is already done. Let me know if you are going to sell it.;)

Great!

As per my sig I am in the hunt for a kombi. This is just an opportunity to save an old fastback from scrap, and I wont be seeking to turn a big profit for it. Stay tuned.

Had a really close look tonight

Bad:
Floor rusty under back seats
Parcel shelf is soft in places
Dash pad is cracked badly
Some less serious rust around engine hatch
Rust in door sill near front of pass side door near the floor

Good:
Engine looks terrific, trying to fire it up in the morning
Doors/door frames great
Roof gutters great
Front boot area great
Seats are in great shape
Carpets are pretty good
Headlining pretty good

Whats it worth??

well i used to have a fasty... and a square and another notch.

All were mere learning cars. I learned all about late type 3 from them all, all the differences between the years.

I first had 73 then 70 then 72 and now sticking to my 71.

The notch is my first serious project. Now all i need is a job that pays better than centrelink
Still doesn't stop me buying stuff for it :tu:

Actually 2 questions

Whats it worth "as is" if we cant get the engine going?

Whats it worth if she runs well and the auto shifts nicely?

at the end of the day it is worth whatever you are willing pay for it, if you are a fan of the fasty you will pay a bit more than a bug fan.

To be honest, given the rust issues i think ill pass on it.

If it was solid as a rock I would take it and tinker, but given i am chasing a kombi i dont need a tired car i dont really want tying up space in the factory. If anyone wants to know where it is, shoot me a PM.

Oh by the way - the original owners wallet is in the door pocket and includes service book, radio manual, old receipts etc...all in AS NEW condition! It even has two different fascias for the radio with different station markings.

Perhaps some karma will come my way in the form of a lead on a good bay single cab

i paid $900 for my squareback have only spent $500 on the engine
And is almost back on the road
