They are ATS Type 5's in 15x7 and are the only set in the country  I am in the process of tweaking the wheel arches to get it lower. Oh and the black 16's are for sale :)

The Mk2 is such a nice shape. Such a pity they were never properly sold here - just a few run-out 8V GTIs in 1990-91.

I like the Euro 2-headlight grille. All our Mk2s were sold with the 4-lamp GTI grille, so the 2-lamp grille is a nice touch.

Your roads in QLD mus be better than ours here in Sydney - I'd never lower my Mk3 like that!

Yep, its an early 1984 model imported from the UK.

The roads up here are probably no better but it looks good nice & low. I'm working on getting it a bit lower, just got to tweak the arches.

I really like the colour of the car too.

The old wheels looked alright but they were way too heavy for the car and ruined the steering feel and suspension movement. They made the steering very heavy at low speed.

Also the offsets were all wrong making them sit too far in and hit the coilovers. This picture shows how badly the wheels sat;

They are good wheels but just not right for this car. They are more for a MK2 with standard suspension & power steering or even better a MK3

It used to be on lowering springs giving a 60mm drop at the fron & 40mm at the rear but now its on coilovers.

If you want to make your car really low coilovers are the only option but they make the ride quite harsh. If you are looking to lower it & maintain some comfort go with lowering springs. They are much cheaper too.

Walshy,
I was reading somwhere a couple days back that MK1's came with an injected 1.6L motor that put out 110hp from factory.
I realize yours is carbed, but does this sound like the power output of the 1.6 in your MK2? Is it the same engine?

Just curious:dork:

Yes the early Euro Mk1 GTIs came with an injected 1.6-litre engine that made 110 hp (81 kW). It had an 'EG' engine number. This car - and engine - was not sold in Australia. In about 1981 it was updated to the 1.8-litre engine with 82 kW (DX engine number).

Australian-built Mk1s (LS in 1976) and later imported German GLS (1977-79) only had 51 kW 1.6-litre engines. We didn't see the 1.8 until the Cabrio, and the Mk2 GTI, in 1990. Even then they were only 70 and 77 kW respectively.

The injection 1.6 in a MK1 was in the GTI's and were 'Heron' motors. The heads & pistons were different, don't know the specifics. The later Campaign GTI's were 1.8's which were carried over to the early MK2 GTI's.

The engine in mine is the same block but is carb'd rather than injected, it was the top of the range non-GTI engine in the early MK2 range. It was used in the early GL & GT models & later 'Driver' badged cars. Which were the 'luxury' models with the GTI being the sporty model.

I don't know the specific output of my engine as it has an upgraded Weber carb, GTI cam & upgraded exhaust. From factory they had 75 bhp so i'm thinking mine is around 90bhp.

I've got a friend with a seized Heron motor & i'm trying to twist his arm into selling me the heads, pistons & injection system so i can turn mine into Heron motor. Should be fairly unique in these parts :)
