Yes I've been on that crossing too. Abbey Road is only a few blocks from Lord's Cricket Ground, so it's easy to see both the same day.

That white Beetle added to the 'Paul is Dead' rumour of the time. It's number plate - which you can easily see if you have the album on vinyl - is LMW-28-IF.

See, Paul Maccartney would have been 28 years of age IF he was still alive. And LMW was supposed to stand for Linda McCartney Weeps (because he's dead). Add this to the various other supposed clues such as Paul is the only one in bare feet (so he's a corpse), George is the gravedigger, Ringo is dressed as an undertaker, John is supposed to be dressed as a parson, etc etc, blah blah. Read more about the Paul is Dead story here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_is_dead

The VW was said to have been owned by John Lennon, but in fact it was owned by a couple who lived in the flats across the road, and its appearance in the famous album cover shot (and its number plate) was pure conincidence. The studio is behind the whitish brick fence just in front of the VW on the left - today it is covered in graffiti. The VW came up for sale in the 1980s, still with its original plates, and was sold for $25,000. The car still exists today - it's part of the VW museum collection at Wolfsburg where it can be seen today.

No, it's a 1968, first UK-registered on 10-4-1968. The Abbey Road album was recorded between February and August 1969, and the famous Abbey Rd photo was taken on 8-8-69, at the end of the recording work. The Abbey Road album was released in September 1969. The information sign on the display in the Wolfsburg museum clearly says that John Lennon ordered the car in 1967 (he didn't - it wasn't owned by John Lennon) and that it's a VW 1300 (it isn't - you can clearly see the VW 1500 badge).

Interestingly the UK letter-year reg system came in in 1963 (where 1963 is 'A' reg, 1964 is 'B' reg etc), so April 1968 should be 'F' reg. This car uses the system - the last letter is 'F'.

Aside from the F reg (68) giving it away the other clue is the 2 tone wheels.

most vws have 400 layers of paint on the rims by now but 68 was the only year originally that was 4 stud and black/white
Starting 69 they painted them silver, although Aus had a handfull of early carry over models that used the last 2 tone rims up.
