2011 Hillclimb race prep. updated 13/02/2011

After a fun & succesfull 2010 Hillclimb race season i decided after speaking with Larry that the little 1916 deserved a teardown and a little luvin.
Larry inspected all parts in his home garage ( oh yes, we are professionals ) and found all to be good with no signs of wear or oil starvation.
A new set of lifters and valve springs were purchased and a few tweaks her and there were made.
This footage is of the motor at it,s second start up after the rebuild, minus the msd ignition, on Larrys engine stand.
I will post furthur updates and photo,s in the lead up to my first event including a dyno session.

Cheers Col

Six years really!
Wow that seems like only yesterday.
I am looking forward to racing with all the guys and girls (Christine ) this year, we should really stir a few people up.
A real VW assault on the Hillclimb scene.
Not to mention the odd beer or two the night before.

I have now installed the engine into my car.
It is running smooth enough to be able to drive it on and off the trailer.
Today i took the car to the my local exhaust shop to have them reinstall the muffler.
I tryed to take a short cut with it,s install and it all went pear shape.
That will teach me for not doing the job right the first time.
A keen eye will notice the dodgy coil wire. I have ordered a new set from VWparts.net as with the new coil position the original lead won,t reach.
When these parts arrive i will book the car in for a dynotune.

Sorry havn,t been on for a few days i,ve been busy preping the car for Bathurst Hillclimb this weekend.

Well dyno tune was interesting to say the least.
Keith and i were after a little more hp and to extend the torque curve so i can hold the car and rev it a little more rather than changing gears.
The two changes we made were very minimal ie,
Collector size and polish the intake manifolds.
So after dyno on Friday night it indicated i have lost 12hp.
But i went up 2 sizes in main jets and 1 in venturi size.
Also the torque curve is identical to previous but holds on for another 300rpm.
So draw your own conclusions from that!.
Just goes to show that a dyno is only a tunimg tool and an indication of your motors output. I,ll reserve my judgement till after this weekend.
I will say though the car revs clean and strong with no slowing up to the limited 7500rpm in third gear on the dyno.
Anyway back to the shed i,ve got a couple of little things to tidy up before my trip on Friday.

Sweet, nice looking kit on that engine. What carbs are you running and with the hats... have you tried various sorts? or how did you choose those ones.

Thanks for the positive comments.
I run 48ida,s which are now really old school as most VW,s now run fuel injection. Oh well call me old fashion.
Hats i presume you mean velocity stacks?. Yes i dynoed both standard IDA and my large trumpet style. Absolutely no difference in hp at all, but i run the larger trumpets. They just look horny LOL.

Very drivable i did over 20,000 miles with them on this motor just not quiet so tuned for racing.
They are however very loud!
The induction noise is almost deafening, anybody who has driven a VW with 48ida carbs up a hill at 100k,s will now exactly what i mean.

Dyno figures interesting! maybe worn lifter produced less friction did you have them faced and/or polish them that would help....and maybe a big airbox over those trumpets would reduce intake pressure...hmmm anyway sounds great i rekon the beetle will go well with it

happy racing
