Hey Dyno,
Respect your comment as in the main you are right.....who needs a plate when there are a bucketload of goodies we can all spend our readies on for our
cars.
However, this is a privately owned rare plate, so apart from a small transfer fee (just like stamp duty when you buy a car) the Government get very
little from the sale.
Actually the owner is highly likely to profit from this sale.....how many other times has the Government provided us all with a profit opportunity?
And, we expect the next owner will profit from the plate too if and when they decide to sell it in the future.
So, it’s not all that bad.
And if you’ve got a brilliant VW, a Dannenhauer and Stauss or a Meyers Manx or an Ascort (as some lucky folks in Adelaide do) then this rare
“VW” plate be might be just your thing......whilst bearing the above profit/investment opportunity in mind.
After all, in SA there is only 1 “VW” plate.
Cheers
Stew.

What's an "ascort"?...I've always liked my VW's whole... PS, know where you are coming from... but I've never been into fibreglass kit cars.
Last D&S I knew of here in SA was sold in the late 90's, was a coke can resto attempt and had a good spread of bondo underneath the top coat for
$54K... That's not the same car we are referring to, is it? the one that was sitting next to Speedster #7 and the crotch cooler vert wreck? yeah
sorry to interrupt... Mods? clean up the thread so he can get on with it...

Although the Ascort was fibreglass, it was not a kit car. It was a quality fibreglass bodied coupe with Okrasa modified engine to give performance to
match the shape. It was built in Australia from 1959 - 61.
19 cars were constructed, although the final 6 were sold unfinished. 13 of the cars are known to still exist in various states of condition.
The restored Ascort in SA has an "ASCORT" numberplate and that does add a nice touch to the car.

Still just like a kit car, same as the Eurekas.
It wasn't built by VW, just some blokes idea of a sports car.
Many have tried and not succeeded, that's why only a few were made, if they were any good there would be a lot more?
My opinion is they look like a poor mans Karmann, no where near as stylish, and fiberglass, WTF

The Ascort was never a poor man's Karmann Ghia. It was first built in 1958/59 and at that time the only Karmann's here were private imports and the
price was hardly aimed at the poor man. In 1959 its list price was 2250 pounds, compared to a VW at 971 pounds and a porsche 1600 was 2545 pounds.
The car was aimed at where the designer considered the Karmann fell short. The Ascort had the Okrasa TSV 1300 which gave it far superior performance,
full instrumentation extensive sound proofing and a number of other interesting little touches.
The body is not like a kit car in that it is not just a fibreglass shell dropped on a VW pan. It is actually a very nicely built item with extensive
double panelling, built in crash protection etc. It is actually built like a brick Sh#t house. Many kit car bodies tend to be a shape made out of
fibreglass as that is cheap and convenient. The Ascort was designed by Mirek Craney who was a fibreglass expert and the car was designed around the
material. Nothing wrong with fibreglass if it is designed properly. That is why Lotus and Corvette have stuck with it over the years.
Yes it was largely one man's dream and yes it was probably doomed to fail and yes not everyones styling favorite, but it is a very interesting bit of
Australian automotive history. Even VW acknowledges that. The Ascort is written up (in German) in the April 2010 Vokswagen Magazin (International
publication).

And that particular one above is amazing.Have seen it near my joint a few times.
Fair enough if ya dont like it,just dont bag the shit out of it.I'd rather buy this for 30k (if thats what it might go for) than an overpriced
'rare' beetle
