There's a thread on the samba somewhere about the worst splits being restored.
Nearly everything in it make this one look in mint condition.
These ones are good examples of the projects people are taking on.
How would you even know where to start

I've seen pictures of that blue one back on the road!
Amazing workmanship and vision really...
That bottom one, I'm not sure that's salvageable!

Any sane person would agree with you but for those with more dollars than sense that desperately want a barndoor 23 window samba thats how they
roll.
Gerson's make almost every panel for splitties now that you can pretty much build one from scratch.
I've watched my good mate Don rebuilding splits not quite that bad but almost turned to dust using Gersons panels.

IMO its a very fine line between 'restoring' and 'building a brand new van with replacement parts'.
where do you draw the line? ive seen 'restos' where little more than the build plate was retained

Yes Volksy85 but I think the initial intention is there - to restore a basket case. Either way, it's a massive job.
I started cutting the rust of my lowlight cab, when I started cutting out the areas of concern there wasn't much original metal left by time I'd
finished. Complete front floor, front inner and out valiance, both A pillars, windscreen surround, doglegs, and many other bits and pieces. Allot of
these were new replacement parts as OG parts were't available.
I think that's part of the fun )
