steering box replacement-what to do


hi guys,
i need to replace my steering box real soon, whats the best way to go?
Are they available new? What are reco ones like and where do i get one.
i noticed wayne penrose has got a new genuine one at $1100, are they worth that sort of money? wasn't planning on tripling the value of my bus by replacing the box!:crazy:

any help would be appreciated.

also try a guy called dave on 9414 985 073 or bob at volkscare adelaide is a machinist and does rebuilds.

For that sort of money why not make the most of the exchange rate and go rack and pinion from creative engineering in the UK

thanks for the replies guys, the creative setup doesn't seem to be for 73-79 busses, or am i missing something:crazy:

first make sure it's the box, i have just had the drag replaced link and what a bloody great fix, also filled the box with bearing grease just take the nippel end of poke it in the filler hole and pump it will displace the oil if any out

So You have a KOMBI - Bus... ??

steering boxes got more expensive as they were changed on later models..

I'm sure You can pick up a good used one

they do have adjusters on steering boxes.....

Your tie rod ends NOT worn???

Thanks for all the advice guys, i've just sourced one from vw heritage in the UK. a new one for about $590 delivered. Fitted it along with new draglink and pivot pin, i can actually take one hand safely off the steering wheel now! i cant believe the difference. these guys were great to deal with, paid for it on Thursday, arrived at my place Tuesday morning.
