the plan?


Hi need advice yet again!
Wondering how difficult it is to drop a box out and to put in an other box. I want to keep the current axles brakes etc. and I have the used box to go in.
I didn't get it done on the weekend due to weather and was quoted just over a $1000 including cleaning up axles brakes etc.

Easy job mate. Grab a trolley jack, some axle stands and a manual and you'll be fine.
I have the tool for the cv's and im in marrickville if you need to borrow it.

Quite a job to change out axles as well (assuming it's a swinger), hence the thousand dollar quote.

Not saying it can't be done depends on your level of mechanical skills, tools etc

Not too hard a job.

Rip the engine out, undone brakes lines, handbrake cables, clutch cable, starter wiring. Unbolt axles at the spring plates(be sure to mark them so you get the same toe setting afterwards). Undo shifter coupling, undo gearbox mounts. Roll the gearbox out the back of the car on the wheels.

Now I have no idea how to change the axles but I'm sure someone can chime in. Do that.

Then bung it back in again!!
Make sure to check that your gearbox mounts are in good condition. Refit the box. Make sure that you put the earth strap back on at your front gearbox mount. Reset you toe at the springplates the same. Connect and bleed brakes. Then adjust your shoes, then adjust your handbrake. When you reconnect your shifter coupler check the condition of the coupler if it's a later style one with the square rubbers.

I would also recommend changing the rear wheel bearings and axle seals while you're going. And make sure you check the condition of your axle tube seals. Fill the gearbox with oil. Make sure your throwout bearing and clutch are good and throw your engine back in. Adjust your clutch.

It's the "do that" bit where things get interesting.

My 2c to add
Leave the hydaulic brake lines, you won't even need to bleed them that way, undo axle nuts before the vehicle is off the ground, the wheel bearing puller is one of the difficult jobs, when swapping axles beware of the fulcrum plates and I believe the axles and fulcrum platse stay together as a set for the correct clearance. Also set the axle flange tension by adding extra gaskets, and don't forget to fit all the spacers, and in the correct order.

What is the fulcrum plate?

I think it would be easier to put the complete box & axles in & just swap the brakes over. I seriuosly think changing swingaxles while in situ would be a total prick of a job.

Could be wrong though.
