Hello from me
Hi,my names Grant and I recently bought an oval window beetle, not original but pretty cool anyway imo. She's a 56 body on a 68 floorpan with
fibreglass kit been off the road for 7 plus years sitting in the elements of Canberra before being bought up to Qld. Starts and runs ok after not
being started for that long haha only a vw could do that. Does anyone know if a 350mm diameter aftermarket steering wheel is wide enough for qld
roadworthy on this car? I know it's probably not the right place to ask but if anyone has a pretty straight front bumper to match they want to sell?
Thanks,Grant.

Hi mate, welcome aboard.
A very interesting car you've got there. I'm not sure why someone would bother to change an oval to the '68-onwards style decklid, tail-lights,
bumpers and fuel filler. Must be a '70s thing I suppose, people did mad things to good Beetles back then. Have you got a picture of the dash and the
front end? I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

There is a grill that fits in the whale tail and vented through the deck lid I removed it as Ive started prep for painting. I bought the car off a
bloke in his 50's that did his apprenticeship with VW he had an oil cooler system in the whale tail and a very quick Subaru motor in the car which he
completely built, body changes etc as well in 1981. he later sold the car but kept the motor to put into an older porche as it out performed the
porche motor . the beetle now has a stock but healthy 1500. Over 20 years later the old car resurfaced in shabby condition but he jumped at buying
it back to fix up again, he recently moved cars and all to qld from Canberra but due to multiple projects I picked it up for $2500 which I'm happy
with, not a rust hole anywhere, mechanically pretty good just needed fluids changed. I will just scrub her up and repaint, get it back on the road,
maybe one day I will put it back to a more original looking oval but I'm in no hurry for that, i think a good clean up and a coat of paint will make
a big difference and I like the flared guards so.... probably look better without the whale tail but as I said I'm in no mad hurry to change it just
yet. dash is pretty well blanked off and fitted with a number of VDO guages etc nothing that can't be changed back at some time later. The semaphores
worked in 1981 when it went for roadworthy but trans dept said that it showed insufficient intent to turn so he put the 68 indicators on the back,
front as you see it. 56 floor pan had some rust hence the change, the rest was just his taste. too good to throw away

hahaha thats excellent Don love to catch up let you get reaquainted with the old car and any advise/info youve got for me would be welcome. I'll take
you up on the bumper too if that pans out. Bloody small world and I love knowing a bit of history on old things so you being on the sunny coast and
the irony of that has just become part of my story lol. When I can work out the pm thing I'll send you my details, talk soon ,Grant.

It was an 80s trend to modernise the older bugs
Theres one here that you would swear is a 68-69 bug everything about it is late 1500 till you notice it has small 6 volt windows.
Its like this one but has the full carrera kit, late aprons front and back whaletail, bonne, guards, door handles, late fuel filler, 4 lug wheels,
even the dash looks late, but it's really a 62 model
