1915 type 3.

I have been thinking for a long time about building or rebuilding a larger type 3 motor.

I drive my car quite mildly and just need more power to have that feel that the car could more than keep up with traffic (and pass it!) while keeping the budget down. I dont plan a rough job my any means and hope to make crispy clean job of it within a couple of barriers if possible and hope you guys can check this over with me?

I want to keep the current 1 3/8" exhaust (if possible).
I would like to try and use the current stock twin carbs.

using my current stock case, clean and line bore(if required?)

94mm piston and cyl set.
stock crank (balanced)
stock rods
suitable cam (please recommend one)
stock or ratio rockers (opinions?)
electronic ignition SVDA distributor
stock heads with work or new ones?

The stock twin carbs are called a 32PDSIT and I believe thay have 24mm venturis. I think that I can upgrade the venturis to 28mm and I suppose they can also get bigger jets.

How much budget power can I make with an average exhaust and a modified stock twin carb setup?

Can or should it be tried?

Thanks.

I am sure if you email one of the guys in the USA they could do you a type 3 motor . the Oz dollar is good at 1.09 shipping from usa about $550

This is far more than I would like to spend.

To build a 1915 needs not so many new parts and could cost very little relative to a full import motor. It seems that the main components I need are just new pistons and cylinders, a cam and maybe heads. Or possbibly webbers (I can buy those from USA) if the stock suggestion is really not enough for the intake. It was just an idea that the engine would appear stock with the original air filter/oil bath setup not to mention saving $$. The parts and machining required may only cost about $2000.

I was also thinking about this 1915 kit
http://www.kustom1warehouse.net/1914cc_Engine_Rebuild_Kits_for_VW_Volkswagen_...

Freight is around $500 though but it sounds pretty good and includes most of the costly parts except for a cam and heads.

They should be able to do that easily on a stock engine. I had my stock 1500cc single-port Beetle up past 85mph on a downhill section and it wanted to keep going. That thing was knackered, it had only about 70psi compression in #3 cylinder and was running 40W70 oil to stop the bearings from rumbling. I would say that a good stock Type 3 should do 80-90mph on the flat.

What I need to know is what I might get from a fresh built 1915 and could it be done with my stock modified carbs and 1 3/8" exhaust?? Not an old 1600.

I have had the current 1600 up to 82 mph but it took a long time to get there.

There is a bunch of stuff here on getting the most from stock. http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/mods.htm

Yes - what you say will work

I have a 1916 with a 1 3/8" (going to 1 1/2") fully merged system with a stock crank, mild cam and dual DRLA's
Makes 70+ HP

Stay away from the ratio rockers - too much work
Just go with an Engle 110 or I have a 22/62(??) I believe it is a Pobjoy torque cam

Your stock carbs will work - but I would spring for a set on new IDFs or some DRLA's

You WILL need to get your cased bored, opened AND decked

If your case and crank has been ground, bored or had the thrust bearing face cut before consider new replacements

You will also need new heads - the stock ones will die in a year or 2 if you just open them up. They dont have the support (meat) to stop them leaking.

Like Bizarre said your case will need work to make sure the nice new crank and cam all fit correctly and then you would be better off to pay some one to put it together and that could cost twice as much as the engine kit , add new carbies , new exhaust , clutch and the list goes on:fakesniff:

you wont get much more top speed if at all.

you will jsut get there sooner. the new engine is going to give you power, but unless you start changing your drivetrain, you are just going to get moving faster.

Ok then, I can spring for the IDFs (twin 40s?) and will get a bigger exhaust another day.

Now that the intake has increased from the original plan can or should it have a more agressive cam than the 110?
Should I upgrade rods to H beams or is that still unnecessesary?

Ratio rockers and new pushrods are not overly expensive either and I am keen to try. Are they really that hard or are they just not a match for this engine?

I have never built an engine before but I am sure I can educate myself along the way and do it well.

What about the flywheel, stock or lightened?

Thanks guys, I will give Stan a call sometime as I imagine he has all the answers and could supply the parts too.

Really looking fwd to it as soon as I think I can afford to. I am really thorough with this sort of work (even though I have not built an engine) as I will make sure I understand everything and not move on until I am 100% right, problem is that this usually takes a long time for me. So this job could take many months in the end.

Around a year ago I have removed all the external parts from the motor, then cleaned and reassembled with some new gaskets, seals, bits and pieces, powder coated tin and a new exhast too so it looks really good right now but all stock. This will make for clean start in the rebuild.
