red urethane mounts - grease

Hi reading on forums around the place i found this interesting idea about the red bugpack urethane mounts i am planning to mount or the irs rear trailing arms.

"Use a small bit on a die grinder. Go to the center of the bushing, and cut a ring all the way around the inside. Cut 2 or 3 slots --- towards the inside. As you grease the front end, grease will be forced into the ring area. No more squeeks."

"warm a bowl of water up in the microwave for about min 15. toss the bushings in for a few minutes. this will make it easier to install and once it cools it forms to the beam or whatever its being installed into easier and gets rid of the squeek."

"Grease containing molydisulphide is the thing to use. Castrol LMM is one."

Does this sound like anything others have done... I have bought some threaded 10x1.5 rod stock to help me pull the cap back in... and then i will install the standard bolts. I'm thinking i will bolt it in place without the torsion bar to start with, and ensure the trailing arm does not bind... might have to trim to fit... have seen others do this before.

Cheers guys
(if you have had success with a particular grease please let me know)

You often get a small plastic sachet of LMM grease included when you buy urethane bushes.
I guess the manufacturer should know what they are doing.

If you're talking about the bushes which go on the rear spring plates with the four lugs around them, definitely don't go carving channels into them! The method which that quote describes would only make any sense on the front beam, as there are no grease nipples anywhere else on Bug suspension! I wouldn't do it anyway. If you don't like the squeaking, fit rubber bushes rather than urethane. When I did my rear torsion bar bushes I used new VW OEM rubber bushes and they work great. I put a bit of talcum powder to help them slide on. I don't think that they should be greased, as this will encourage them to slide around. As far as I understand it, the design intent for these bushes is that they grip to the moving parts and the rubber twists to follow the motion, there should be no sliding of the bush over the torsion bar or spring plate and hence no grease should be needed. On my swaybar I have urethane bushes which I greased with the supplied white grease which came with the bushes.
