Hi ive just recently changed my baja from swing axle to irs. I have been driving it for 6 weeks now and 3 of the cv boots have split. Im just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if theres away from preventing this. I filled boots with grease dont no if this would cause it to split?

Hi
Firstly You are not supposed to fill the boots with grease...
ONLY the CV Joints .... with lithium based MOLY grease
but I do put a lot of grease in mine.. lol

I found rubber boots do crack... maybe NOS ???
and after a short period of time..
but I have found the colored boots are made from polyuethane which is much better than rubber...
excellent stuff...
had the same experience with a magna years ago...

cheers

Does noone else really like the idea of the toyota boot, souns like a really cheap self servicable item that should last a long time. I wonder if the smaller section would fit type 1 CVs? I'l post and see what comes.

Mat would know a good CV Boot as He has had experience with them..

and probably with inferior ones too, lol

I have a New CV joint boot still in its box I bought years ago..

and You can cut it to suit many size axles and cv joint sizes..
Don't know if it will fit VWs.. lol

must have bought it for a Mitsubishi..lol
looks good quality..

NOS rubber boots aren't probably a good idea.. lol
as they are already old when You buy them... lol

Doh !!!

They were the Lobro boots IIRC

I'll investigate a credit and a swap to the Wurth boots, the rubber looked very nice. but not sure re; size.

Matt I checked this afternoon and they were the Wurth ones. I tend to believe the problem lies with the fact that Mick has the suspension raised so much that the boots are always at an acute angle but he's never going to listen to me:mad:

Did you put a hose clamp on the driveshaft side? I'm told this can make boots split and the "keep your old vw alive " book says to put a hoseclamp on them. Original vw driveshafts also had a clamp on them.

No clamp onto the driveshaft just to the cv but all boots have split at both gearbox and wheel!

Has he notched the spring plates or ground down the lower stops for more down travel? May be an axle length/angle issue. If at a high angle, did he pull the inners along towards the centre of the axle? Sometimes if at extreme angles the axle spline will rub on the inner ribs of the boot. Check how they split.

Hi

I found them on ebay

My new rubber ones lasted a very short time
and both cracked badly...

I changed them before they split right thru..
not sure where You can get the colored polypropylene boots
but its much stronger than rubber...

can't say I've seen any for sale in Australia..

I've never used clamps on the VW axles , but I used to use large thick cable ties on My Mitsubishis..

Matt no the springplates aren't notched and the boots appear to be split around the middle of their length. They're not pulled or stressed in any way as far as I could see

Dying to go offroad but all 4 cv boots are practically split in half now so i cant go offroad. I havnt done any offroading with these cv boots so i havnt been rough with them. If anyone has any good ideas let me know thanks. I was wondering if theres special boots for those super high racing dune buggies. Just trying to think of ideas.

these are polypropylene so they are super tough...

I don't think these will crack at all...
polypropylene is the BEST... whatever color..

I'll have to keep looking for others.. now..

PS: most colored parts like colored distributor caps are rubbish
