The New Guy

Hi there,
Im Andrew, from sydney.
I have a 74 beetle, auto, in pieces,
I will be starting to work on it shortly,
It will be slammed, and have some custom paint and stuff..
But theres a fair bit of rust to cut out and replace before i get to that stage.
Also considering a chop, but im not sure about that one.
I will be using this forum alot as i am fairly new to the vw thing, so get ready for alot of questions and things,
And for some lucky people, you will be getting my hard earned cash, as i am after a fair few various parts, panels and an engine.
Looking foward to getting to know some people here.

Cheers
Andrew B

NICE BEETLE!!
You sure give RAW a good plug throughout that thread haha
I will also have to check out classic vee dub and vollks.com.au
I will be going the same route as you with the narrow beam and drop spindles.
Not sure yet as to how you lower the rears on these things... much easier on commodores and fairlanes haha
Those telstar seats, they go straight onto the vw seat rails do they?, i am after a set of buckets for mine.
I also like those speaker housings, neat stuff.
Beautiful car mate.

1. I think you can adjust the rear but not easy

2. When i bought the car it had the seats installed but new rails were welded in for the seats, they are a little large for the car but they are comfy, there are quite a number of seats that will fit and if you are going for the modified look then keep a lookout for seats that go for sale on here.

3. The speaker housings were from classic

Its not a super, but as I said they didnt make standards in semi auto after 71 and yours has the smaller back window so you will probably find your car is between 68 and 70.

It is semi auto right? not someones backyard full auto creation?
they never actually made beetles with full auto trans but they have been converted using type3 autos before.

I will do some research on the rears, it cant be that hard :dork:

Ahh rails welded in, well thats a pain, im too lazy for that haha,
I would like to know what seats will fit in these, mainly after bucket style seats.
I will keep an eye out on here.

Now this is why i am here!
I got very little info on the car when i got it, and thought there may be something fishy going on?
I was told it is a semi auto,
i removed the transmission fluid pot thingo from inside the rear drivers side guard, so it must be.
Its definetly not a manual, i know that pattern.
I am about to pull the motor out and lift the body off the pan to do some rust repairs, so i will be able to get a better look at it all,
I guess i should find the chassis and body numbers and see what this thing actually is?
Again, i dont know a hell of alot about vw's,
and i have never even seen a semi auto in person till i got this thing, so its all new to me, ad i appreciate al the help and any advice

Here ya go, although this is from a 1600 superbug, yours wont have park so don't drive yourself nuts looking for it

They added that in 72 when they realized that if the handbrake cable snapped there is nothing to hold the car still.

Yeah that's it.

THe semi autos are a great box when they are working.
Mate of mine had 2 of them and I used to work on one regularly at the garage for an old duck who owned it since almost new.

They're pretty ordinary from a performance point of view though, very slow off the mark due to starting in 3rd gear and run out of top end due to low diff ratio but they are great in the city with stop/start and slow bumper to bumper traffic, also abit heavier on fuel compared to a manual bug same model.

It's just getting hard to keep them on the road now as some parts are no longer available and not many mechanics know much about them as they're fairly rare and alot more complex.

Lee and a couple of others on here know them back to front and can steer you in the right direction if you decide to keep it going.

slow starting off ??? just drive it like a manual and start in low:crazy: ,or for more sedate take off use 1:),as taking off in 2 is the pits as it takes a bit to get it going:(
