CSP Shifters


He all!

I have a small question that'll most likely seem a little, stupid to everyone, but I'm learning as much as possible about everything as possible so I can do everything I want to do with Zelda.

Anyway, after that little introduction, I am curious as to whether or not CSP Shifters and all other shifters that you can buy that are third party accessories, do they go from a H pattern to a straight pattern, or do they stay with the stock H pattern?

I ask this because I'm curious as to whether if they go to a straight pattern, does it where out the syncros on the gearbox or not?

I just want to know before I make a purchase, that is all.

What CSP one did you grab?
I'm currently looking at the Scat ones as well, but would prefer to get a CSP shifter, as Scat only do straight handles and CSP have the normal(?) looking ball.

Hi Seb,

The shift pattern is determined by the gearbox, not by the gear shift, so any after market gearshift remains H pattern. The thing with the after market gearshifts is that most of them have a shorter throw, which means you can change gears more quickly, which some might say is fairly pointless on a stockish Beetle, but it does mean you lose less momentum when climbing hills :)

I have a CSP T bar handle and it's very nice, and has a 60% shorter throw. It was expensive, and if your money is limited you would spend it more constructively on other things.

Bear in mind you can also buy 'quick shift' kits that will give you the shorter throw for not very much money at all, and retains your current gearshift. Not as sexy, but effective and much more economical.

^^^ what he said, i lived with the $10 short shifter spacer for awhile in mine, at a minimum i wouldnt drive one without it now, but ive since experienced a few others- csp berg & bugtech, all of them are $300-400ish but are insanely strong, nice feeling, oh and looking good helps a little too :smilegrin:

some say a 60% reduction will crush synchros and my bugtech is a 62% -its mentally short in the H

40% in the bergs seemed perfect for everyday use, quite comfortable, only thing i can say for sure is unless your really short get a bent one. i need to bend the bugtechs shaft to make it more comfortable for my seating position

Hi

I modified my shift rod and fitted a bent Type 3 shifter with a quick shift, cheap as chips and works great.

I also put a light spring on the shift coupling that pulls the shifter to 3/4 side of the neutral gate.

I used to have a short shift kit with berg shifter (which I wish I still had) in my 69 and the throws were about a quarter of an inch. My mechanic said it was the tightest gearbox he'd ever driven.

This was my CSP (60% reduction) with 2.5in extension. Loved the reverse lockout, got tired of realigning the shift plate after anyone else drove it.

....so I've gone back to stock with "$10 quick shift kit"

What does the reverse lockout plate do? Is it something that is solely for drag cars, thus the lack of reverse?
I can't do this as I have to reverse out of my driveway daily, but I am definitely finding it more and more difficult to put the car in reverse.
This I would assume would mean I would need a new shift plate as well as a quick shift kit.

Can't believe it is so cheap from Vollks :)

Reverse lock-out (the "t" bit on the shaft) removes the need to push down on the shifter to get it into reverse. You pull the "t" up instead. Very nice feature.

This probably means that your shift plate is out of alignment. You just need to loosen the two bolts under the shifter's boot and adjust it until its right. This is a trial and error type of task.

Ah I see, I'm somewhat thinking if I replace the gearstick with a Berg or something of the sort, they all have the lever that you pull up to go into reverse.

I'll have to take it out and have a look at some point and see what is going on with it, but it just keeps getting more and more difficult.
I'm thinking I just get a new gearstick and this will solve all my issues :)

and change the bush in the tunnel & the one on the nose cone while your at it :tu:

shift issues will come from those being non existant, and the plate under your shifter not being in 100% the right spot, notice the slotted holes the bolts go through? those are there for a reason, loosen, push the base one way, left/right/forwards/back tighten, test for all gears, continue till happy :)

cant get 1st? move forwards/left
cant get 2nd/reverse? move rear/left
cant get 3rd? forward/right
4th? rear/right

happy medium between the two, and also between the plate under the shifter base and shifter base itself. good luck - it can be frustrating!
