Meeting registration requirements in a race car


Hi there,

I am wanting to tap into the knowledge of those who understand what can be acceptable in a registered vehicle.

I am not trying to build the car around rego (even limited) but if it is possible I will explore that possibility.

The items on my car that will be non standard are in particular:
- rear disc brake conversion
- hydraulic handbrake
- custom made pedal assembly
- custom mounting for dual brake masters and clutch master cylinder
- roll cage (this is the one I haven't done yet as I understand that I will need to go to a company that deals with meeting both CAMS and Main Roads to have this)
- Race seat and harness
- Battery location
Outside of the above I don't believe there is anything that is particularly an issue.
Even if it is easier to go down the route of some limited reg (I will only do club rego anyhow) I am still interested.

The reason for even thinking about rego is to help in tuning (i.e. road test) and to open up the option of targa/road rally events.

rear discs, if fronts/master are of same car/origin are used in the same combination of spec for an already approved in aus car it will be ok - after individual approval, match fronts to rears with adequate MC-no issue provided its all bolted on adequately.

hydraulic handbrake- NO, must be a mechanical (cable) handbrake separate from the hydraulic system for normal braking so in the eventof total brake failure you still have SOMETHING, perhaps if it was separate calipers, res & lines it could be possible...?

pedals, prove it works & is stronger/better than the oem stuff, failsafe etc - shouldnt be an issue.

dual mc, adjustable bias on the pedals? doubtful. separate front & rear mc? find another car with a factory system like that if you can but doubtful.
hydro clutch, no problems provided it works & slave/master work correctly with pedal ratios & your clutch, obviously.

cage, see sides ;) same issue im going to have, also talk to bix/drew hes told me more ontop of sides, just cant remember off the top of my head.

harness, autotechnica same as sides, has seatbelt buckles not camlocks, looks shit but its the legal way IF it didnt have retractables from factory, fixed belts can be replaced, nothing else.

seat - adr stamped/stickered/paper work, no issue, fia/cams should be enough, depends on the car & how vision etc is affected. (no full blown wrap around style) fixed seat? plated as a 2 seater-no issue then.

batt location? better than stock? vented to outside the cabin? no problem.

any questions?? - pretty sure thats covered the lot but ive had a few now(rough nights work)

sounds like every issue ive had to deal with :grind: the concerns/frustrations are shared

Only thing I think I've got to add is re the seat... FIA spec seats SHOULD be enough, but unfortunately they're not.

If your seat doesn't have an ADR compliance marked on it, make sure the supplier can give you the ADR test/compliance paperwork... an engineer should be happy to sign off on the seat then.

Ditto for the method used to mount the seat to the body... in general through bolted to the floor will be a lot simpler to get passed than welded.

Oh - an extra thing on the cage... you don't have to have one company that does both, but you do need an Engineer (Authorised Person in Queensland Transport speak) who is happy to work with and sign-off on whatever your cage builder does for the Road Rego side. Then for the CAMS side you need a Senior Scrutineer who'll do the same to say it meets required specs there.

Just in my case I decided it would be easier to have the cage (sorry - safety structure) done by someone who was already a QT Authorised Person.
