Hi
You will probably need a new fuel pump... alternator type- offset
and a new alternator stand..
the generator one is too thick... wrong size..

You shouldn't need shims for the pulley etc..
if its all genuine VW...
non genuine pulleys and alternators aren't identical to them??

You can buy kits...
check out classic vee dub's website and click on specials...
for pics and prices..

the voltage regulator under the rear seat isn't needed with an alternator with inbuilt regulator..

check out ; http://www.vw-resource.com/
alternators use a different belt too...

cheers

Lee

If it's your original 1500 carb (I'm thinking solex 30pict1) it should clear an alternator no worries.

The problem child are the early 70s twin port carbs from generator cars with the adjustable stroke linkage.

The bulkier linkage hits.
Unless you need the car back on the road in a hurry and can't wait for a new pump to arrive I would see if you're existing pump fits first, I've had stock gen fuel pumps clear with alternators before.

I'm not sure whether the 75 amp alternator is larger than the 55 or 51 amp models..
I have seen where the alternator is ground away a few mms to clear the fuel pump...
but that isn't really an alternative seeing You have a nice chromed alternator and stand...

cheers

LEE

Hey there!

I just got the exact same, I received a 75 amp kit which included new stand and so forth.
Now, my current engine has a Solex 34pict1. Will I run into issues with it connecting?

Also, I took another look at the wiring setup and am pretty sure I have figured it out. Was confusing myself too much with extra wires that weren't needed.
Basically, because my 75 amp has an internal regulator, there is no need for my external regulator under the rear seat.
What this means is that I have to remove the regulator and splice the correct wires to each other. Then, the wire from D+ on the alternator goes straight to the battery and the wire from B+ splices into the wire that is connected to the dash light. This means that, when that light comes on, the alternator is ready to go. As soon as the engine starts running however, the light should be dismissed. If not, we have issues.

Another thing that I am concerned about myself is my current fuel pump. As you can see below, I don't think I'll have any issues, but am still curious either way.

You'll be fine with that pump and an alternator ;)

Joel,

am I all good when it comes to the wiring aspect of things that I discussed above? Want to make sure before I rip out my current genny and get cracking on the new install...

Your picture seems to have extra cables coming from it?

Motorola type alt

Seb,
Joel's photo is of an externally regulated alternator.
A totally different animal to a gennie and most other alternators.

Try here : http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=50478&page=1#pid470541

Also, re your fuel pump q, most will fit with an alt - the problem comes when having to REMOVE it. With an alt specific pump, it's angled so it can be removed. BUT, it uses a 100mm push rod instead of 108mm.

Hey Ctefeh,

I just had a look at that thread. I won't need to do half of the stuff you had to do when taking out the generator and so forth, but your wiring demonstration is what I was really after!
So, looks like I'll definitely know exactly what to do when it comes to Saturday, which I must thank you for tremendously :)

It's alright, I doubt I'll be needing to remove the fuel pump any time soon, my main concern is getting this alternator on as currently it is touch and go with the current generator when I'm at the traffic lights! :)

Cheers!

My original alternator was the same as the one in Joel's photo, and from memory, when I changed it over, I talked to my auto electrician about it, went home and swapped alternators, then I think I may have driven back to the auto electrician under battery power (only about 2kms) and he connected the rest there.

Anyway, it is a 75amp chrome alternator the same as yours Seb, and here is a photo of the clearance to the fuel pump, which is a straight bolt together one (but chromed).

Jeff!

Alright, thanks man, I'm going to give it a go on the weekend. My generator failed once today already, I reckon if I try again it'll die...
We'll see what happens when I get back in later tonight!

Just finished my conversion, was a bit of a ball breaker but once it was done, I had run into a lot more problems.

Make sure you either get the original oil filler off or purchase a new one before you do the conversion.
I had to much pressure in the engine due to no oil filler on the new alternator stand and she has sprung a massive oil leak now :(

Won't be driving her until a new oil filler comes. Hopefully you learn from my mistakes!
