IRS Conversion Questions
Hey everyone.
Changing my car over to IRS.
Have run into a little issue with parts compatibility.
Diagonal arms are superbug items.
And I've managed to get a set of double spring plates off a Type 3.
The issue I'm having is that the to rear bolts on the spring plate and diagonal arm line up perfectly but the forward hole in the diagonal arm
doesn't match the spring plate. They are both towards to the bottom of the car, but not in the same location.
Has anyone run into the issue before?
I was thinking that to fix this I'll swap the spring plates to the opposite sides of the car and redrill the diagonal arm. I'll also add the 4th
hole in the middle too.
Anyone see any problems with this approach?

Hi
The type 3s were not based on beetle parts..
so, arms from a n IRS beetle would most probably bolt on..
OK on drilling the spring plates... they may be hard to drill???

68 semi auto beetles were the first beetles to have the CV Joint rear suspension IRS..
and many of their chassis are in different bodies these days...
My Son has one in a 1956 beetle..

You have your spring plates reversed, that ia a RH spring plate on the LH side.
Picture is a type3/semiauto LH trailing arm.

I agree with above looks more like the double spring plate is on the wrong side/upside down. Follow the link to my posts below about my build, I have

It's mix match parts that's your problem.
The Sbug trailing arms would be single plate and dont match up with the type3 double spring plates.
The 2 have different bolt hole patterns.
If you're not in a mad rush I have some Type3 trailing arms you can have.
They're double spring plate so no use to me, I hate the double spring plate setup.
*edit
You can see on my singles how the front bolt is slightly higher than the rear one, where as the duals they are both at the same level

It's no worries. I've already swapped them to the other side and drilled the holes into the diagonal arm. Thanks for the offer of the arms thought
Joel. I might still be interested in a spare set. Are you heading to Warwick this year? Meet you there??

Maybe hate is the wrong word, but I do dislike the extra work they create for simple jobs like adjusting ride height.
My black rotary beetle was converted to IRS with a late square rear end and had them, they can just be a real bastard to get apart.
Maybe with the extra weight of a type3 they are warranted but for a street driven beetle I doubt you would ever need the extra strength, noone has
ever had a failure from a single spring plate letting go, if they did they didn't notice
If it did get to that point I'm sure there would be other problems to worry about.

The double plates are advantageous for offroad use though. Being stronger, plus when you start to notch the plates for more travel you still have one
that's not being cut giving you strength.
And if you were willing to bring them all the way to Warwick for me that would be fantastic. I don't think we'll bother with the mirrors though.
then I'd need to buy a Baja ute to put them on. You should probably throw in any SC12 superchargers while you're going I'll take good care of them.

I've already offloaded them all except my original, I'll hang onto that one it's world famous
It's crazy what people pay for them these days, I actually got more than double what I paid for my SC14 on ebay a while back.

71 Supers had twin spring plates as well as the semi auto Beetles, Im not keen on them either.
