If it was a TLE it would have been fully imported...
made in Germany... I would think...
the Fastbacks were TLE
or it has the engine from a TLE Fastback....??

"TL/E" was only for the fastback (E = FI) -- "TL" was the 1600 carb Fastback sold at the same time.
Late Variants and Notches were only "L" models (1600 L).
No FI notches or wagons were sold in Aust. as far as I know. [Edit: But I think in the US after a certain year you could only get a F'back or wagonWITH FI]

I believe the fuel injection was used in type 3 Variant TLE 's in North America because of pollution laws...
I would think those TLE engines may have been imported as the common Aussie made fastbacks had TS badges on them...
and carburetors..

Looks like a fully imported 70 going by the gauges and the badge on the hatch. I don't think I have seen a 70 like that before(except overseas?). I
have seen a few cars with gauges like that but they where 71 or later cars. Did our 70 TLE fastbacks have gauges like that? Any how the chassis number
will tell the story.
Mmmmm my gut is saying it a very nice bitsa.
Great looking car in the pics. I wish my 70 was that nice.

Very Clean looking car, well worth checking it out. The lack of rear pillar vents makes it a 1970 model, but the guages are the German made black VDO
from 1972-73, the original would have been grey faced.
Note the rear badge says "VW-Variant-LE ", which is correct for a fuel injected squareback, so it's not a "TLE " model.
It also has genuine type 3 mudflaps and parcel shelf, looks like it also has a tacho.
Check for rust under the bonnet in the corners ( under the grey vinyl trim) and bumper mounts, rear roof corners especially, as these are prone to
rust and difficult to repair properly.

I think you will find it's a 70. In 71 there were quite a few changes, As VW-VARIANT-L said the rear pillar got vents that made the rust problem
worse around that area. They got different dash with a fan forced demister and round cool air vents in the middle of the dash. Also the windscreen
wipers changed and other changes I can not remember.
A 70 model Squareback will have a chassis number starting with 360 and a 71 will have 361.
From what I have read a well maintained FI type3 is great to drive. You may find it hard to find parts for the FI system and someone who knows how to
fix it properly. I see parts on Samba often.

The seller is confused, as it is definitely a 1970 model squareback. the VIN will start with 360 .......
"The lack of rear pillar vents " and also the earlier style dash with no heater air ducts makes it a 1970 model. These rust a little less than the
later cars , but ultimately doesn't really matter if it is a 70 or
71 car. The high backs were standard on german built cars so are also still technically correct, don't worry about the "bitsa"' bits if it is a
solid minimal rust car.

Has the early dash too, I haven't seen this car before, but if I was looking for another late squareback would check this one out.

The dash pad looks to good to be true. Is it a recover? 70s were the last year with the early dash pad.
My 70 Square is becoming a hell bitsa! Bitsa 72 type3, bitsa 914, bitsa 901, bitsa 911. Soon to have bitsa Kombi, bitsa 412, bitsa 76 t1, bitsa type3
swinger. It's all good

I have a 70 TLE fasty. The injection is great on them.. very smooth. Yours would have had lowback seats originally - in 71 they went to highback.
Looks like your speedo is in km/h mine is mph >> perhaps the gauges have been replaced at some stage.

Car looks good.
Often cars are registered in the following year and their rego papers will be that year. I have a 68 car but my rego paper says 69 being that this is
when it was first registered.
Those wheels look wider than stock type 3 but that's cool. It's a slightly special car being imported and variant badged, efi, real mud flaps etc, a
few nice things.
