You need an alternator specific stand and a different fan belt.

I have a 75a Chrome alternator, and have had no problems with it so far (about 2 years/60,000km), but I have heard of others that have had problems with them, although not first hand - always anecdotal.

I have a 75amp alternator too, chrome, from CVD, and so far so good.

Had a few issues with the parts not matching up (the backing plates) but other than that, nothing but a weird knocking noise from either the alternator itself or the pulley...

I bought a cheap brand new alternator from the states.
The bastards didn't machine a keyway into the front of it for the drive pulley, and said it was a new, more modern design compared to the 'old fashioned' motorola design.

BULLOCKS!

It was useless.
I have a 75 amp alternator from vollks.com.au, and its going great! they are dam reasonably affordable, not chrome, but working and brand new clean look :)

Yeah not really fussed now if the alternator is chromed or not..SpLiTmEiSteRs work imports alot of bosch gear so when i pick up my scat exhaust from IMPARTS I might ask him about a genuine bosch alternator..

Snitz, remember that Imparts like to, well, over price things because they buy from the wrong places.
Do some research and see if you can source elsewhere, Imparts as a last resort ;)

Rsearch kind sir, is the best thing the Internet can be used for.

Well, Day of The VW was the 27th of March this year, so next years will probably be a goer for me as I'm out over the Summer, off to Europe!

And I highly doubt I'll be drinking, but definitely up for some chatting about all types of VW's and would be great to meet everyone finally!

Id prefer to keep my thread on topic here..Finding out whats good in terms of alternators for the wifes 'dub is all that matters. As for vendors prices..if they charge more but provide information and good service and go the extra mile for you..then the prices they charge just becomes a formality.

My apologies Snitz, I didn't mean to go off topic but I'd much prefer to explain myself then just let it stay up in the air, especially when it comes to friends.
But I agree, vendors charge what they want for the services that they provide.

Back to Alternators though, just did some research and found that CVD supply a kit which is more expensive that what Vollks supply as seperate parts.
Keep that in mind maybe? :)

The market sets the price. But good to hear actual prices and service advice. Cheers. Do we have a set price for Alternator conversions?

Alternator @ $159 is 55amp.All that is needed to convert 12V genny to alternator is the alt. specific stand, and of course the alternator. I think the stand is available for around $69

Das ist gut ya!..hopefully when my Phat boy system all arrives tommorrow @ IMPARTS..I may be walking away with an alternator and stand too..these are the last things on the list and then the short motor and all the ancilleries can go off to Peter for the engine build..yay!.

BTW just had all my doghouse shroud and all tin work that I bought new, sandblasted and re-powdercoated for $210..a good price considering half the cost was sandblasting. Ive used Southern Powdercoaters @ lonsdale before and recommend them. Its now run by his son (late 20s/early 30s) and hes a nice approachable guy.I tell you this off my own back and I am not benefitting from giving them a free plug either..cheers Jason
