I have someone here in Sydney claims to have defeated the CANbus and will soon be able to reflash ECU's to remove the immobiliser and CANbus functions. And he is very knowledgeable. If it comes to be, then there will be EE diesel conversions like crazy.

Yeah it shouldn't be too hard, just need a "black box" with a canbus front end on it which simulates data on there from the bits that are missing to make the rest of it happy. I have done similar stuff but not canbus, havn't got the time at the moment, maybe one day. My 2008 rexie even has canbus going to the stereo!
Would your mate know how to get rid of the immobilser in the non canbus ones (2004) I have the key, but i'm fingers crossed its the right key for the computer.

Yes he claims his reflash will remove the code from the ECU that looks for immobiliser and CANbus on all models, even ones that are immobiliser only.
But not ready for production yet. NEVER count on these things until they actually happen.

CANbus ey? The digital cutters I deal with use CANbus for the MC board, BF board and panel communication. The guys in Switzerland that trained me said it was borrowed from mercedes I think?

Yeah CANbus is used in heaps of cars these days - it's basically a two wire local area network. Mercs first started using it in 2005 or thereabouts.

I doubt it, the Subaru ECU injects four different times for each firing.

These EE20 subie diesels can now be run with an afermarket ECU available in the UK for about 1,100 pounds. Use all standard subie sensors except the ECU plug needs to be changed on the subie wiring harness. This opens up a world of possibilities.

I just found some specs for both the Subarus these fit in and the engine itself.
http://www.media.subaru-global.com/eng/whats_new/08_03_07_02e.pdf
The engine is about is about 60mm shorter than the EJ20. Not sure about the height or width though. In other things I have read they weigh about 140kg.

I would be interested to see if there are any issues with fitting it in to a beetle as 150 reliable hp sounds nice.

I reckon no issues fitting it into a beetle. It is more compact than the petrol ones and has the same bellhousing pattern.
You would need to mate it to a Subie gearbox to handle the torque (:tu:) but it would easily fit under the decklid and have 5 nice gears. The turbo location on the diesels is at the bottom and front (back) of the engine so no more cutting firewalls to fit turbos - it sits where the VW muffler once was so you can fit turbo, cat and muffler all in there.

If someone wants to take the plunge and get a diesel motor and aftermarket ecu I would supply a gearbox just to see it all done and installed. I reckon it would blow everyone away at the nats.

If you could get the revs down to 2000rpm on the highway, you could easily get 800km from a standard beetle tank!!! With more torque than ANY petrol motor that would fit into a beetle.

I think that the turbo sits in the right position but its a bit low. You usually need to shorten the sump, so looking at the turbo/exhaust positioning it might be sitting too low perhaps?

Would love to put one of these in a splitty.

Cheers

Because you will need to use a Subaru transmission to hold the torque of these motors, the engine will be around 50mm higher than if using a VW transmission and adaptor plate. This pretty much negates the need for shortened sump, shortened headers and relocating the turbo.

Would love to see one in a splitty, I reckon it would be the perfect combo.

Just plugged the figures into Wes' excel dyno. A beetle with an EE20 diesel and Subie diesel 6 speed, fitted with a 4.44 final drive will do a 14.2 sec quarter mile and be doing 1820 revs in 6th at 100kph. Fitted with 235/60/17. Not bad....not bad at all....

Wouldn't the cost of custom fabrication to get a subaru gearbox modified into a vw be prohibitively expensive? Wouldn't it be more economical to get a vw box strengthened to take the stress of the ee20?
