Distributor Question

Hi All,

Had some issues with my VW...starter motor collapsed, then after installing a new one, the VW would not start....so have been overhauling the Carby, Dizzy, etc.

I had assumed that the Dizzy was a standard. (The VW is a 1970. The engine is a 1600.) So I went onto cip1 and ordered a new dizzy cap and rotor for my Bug. (It seemed from the info on cip1 that it is the same ones for all manual Bugs from about 69 to well through the 70s or into the 80s.....assuming the dizzy is standard.)

When I went to put the new cap and rotor on, it turns out that they are not the same as what I have.

http://members.iinet.net.au/~ppearson/DSCN0488b.jpg
(Left is the old cap, right is the new one I ordered.)

http://members.iinet.net.au/~ppearson/DSCN0489b.jpg
(Right is the old rotor, left is the new one.)

The taller cap and rotor would not necessarily be a problem together if all seated properly. However, the rotor does not seat properly on the shaft in the dizzy. It seems to hit the points before it is all the way on.

I was going to also grab the number off the Dizzy, but by the time I remembered, it was back in and the Bug was actually going again (a big step in the right direction), and the number is on the back of it out of site. So I am not in a rush to pull it off again just yet.

So does anyone have any idea what Dizzy I might have? Any ideas, thoughts, answers based on what info I have provided would be helpful.

Cheers...

The engine isn't original to the car.
You've got the later squat style cap and rotor.

You need the cap and rotor to suit a 73-76 1300 or 1600 engine

The one you have is 71-72 1600/1300

Thanks Joel. I was already pretty sure the engine was not original to the car, but I am still confused about the dizzy. When I go the the cip1 site and look up the caps, it does not matter if I go to a 69-70 manual, a 71-73 manual, or a 74-79...all of them show the same cap and rotor. The parts are listed as;

BOS-1-235-522-056 - OE GERMAN QUALITY DISTRIBUTOR CAP - BEETLE 69-79 / GHIA 69-79 / BUS 69-79 / VAN. 80-84 & BOSCH 009 DIS.
BOS-1-234-332-215 - DISTRIBUTOR ROTOR - BEETLE 69-79 / GHIA 69-74 / BUS 69-79 / VANAGON 80-83 & 009 - OE QUALITY-NON BOSCH

IE. They are meant for ALL Beetles 69-79.

So, do you have any more specifics about the dizzy that a 73-76 engine should have?

Cheers...

Hi
You are looking at specs for USA Beetles...
they aren't always the same as Australian Beetles..
[even if made in Germany]

I haven't come across the short dizzy caps as yet but I have come across the tall rotor buttons...

Your distributor may not be original...

As usual catalogs are always wrong.
Just had a look at the aus 2011 Bosch catalog and it lists only one cap and rotor from 66 on even though there were 3 different ones used in aus.

The tall rotor and cap they sold you is a common one, its for 71-72 stock dizzys and all 009s and replacement SVDAs.

Your original is the 73 and later twin port distributor.
I remember having to walk across hot coals to get a cap and rotor years back.
It may be only Aus that used those distributors, even the points are different and they can't fit electronic ignition.

I'll see if I still have the boxes for the cap and rotor, they may have the part number.

From memory its also a Volvo Cap and rotor too.

Yes Lee, I am rapidly learning that part ordering is not so easy. Even though you think you have the right make/model/engine/etc, there are still unlisted variations that catch you out. Mostly I have been successful with my parts though.

Thanks again Joel. If you do happen to find the boxes and some part numbers that would be awesome. If not, can anyone suggest where I might go looking? I am assuming that if I have the dizzy number that would help lots? lol Also, would it be worth enquiring with a Volvo parts shop?

Cheers..

You really need part numbers to order some parts in the USA..

I usually check on many websites

www.vwparts,aircooled.net
http://www.airheadparts.com

CIP1

cheers

As is typical the boxes that hung around for years I've chucked on my last clean up but seems like that was an aussie only distributor which is why the catalog doesnt list the cap or rotor for it.

Anyway looks like the cap for that one is GB514 and rotor is GB524.
And the points you need for is the 2 piece G529.

THe taller cap which is same as 009 which is what you been sold looks to GB739.

Yours is the one on the right.
