68 Beetle - Reverse lights Yes/No ???

Hi,
I've started working on a 68 1500 Beetle, and I've come across a problem. Did the 68 Beetle come with reverse lights? The car was in pieces when I picked it up and I have 4 sets of lenses. Two sets with reverse lights, and two sets without. I checked the transaxle and I cant find a switch, or any wires. But all the documentation that I've seen tells me that in Asutralia the 68 had reverse lights.

Cheers, Gus

Hi

They weren't fitted in Australia until 1972.

I believe they werent fitted but you can fit the switch to the gearbox same as any other. There is a plug srcewed in instead of a switch i tink. Others will probably confirm this.

they didn't have reverse lights in 1968...
tail lamps were all red on the bottom....

if You put tail lamps with reverse lights in them they will have to work when You get passed for rego..
as most mechanics think all cars came with reverse lamps..

LEE

the gearbox switch is right on the end near the selector shaft

My '68 is a German build and didn't have reverse lights. I have fitted a switch in the gearbox and added a Hella reversing lamp mounted on the bumper bracket. So if you want to be period correct, no reverse lights in the lenses. If you want to be practical, use the lenses with the reverse lights and fit some globes and a gearbox switch.
Cheers..Wayne
