Engine tinware what can i leave off


Hi lads,
i was aout to put the ingine in my car when i remembered that i need to put more tinware on than i am used to. My other bugs i have had baja and buggy havent needed much tin. This is the firsttime i am putting an engine into a beetle.

I have the fanshroud and the barrel covers on top, the ones between the barrels and the pushrods. ut then what...
Do i need one on the flywheel side ... above
under pulley?
Around the pulley?

I have replaced the rubber around the engine bay

WHat do you do about the big holes used for the heaters and other?

Sorry that they sound like noob Qs

Ok, mine's a buggy but every time I take it to Nymeyers' at Belmont (VW specialists) he berates me with the information that "you should have ALL THE TINWARE on, THEY WERE MADE THAT WAY FOR A REASON", mind you I do have all the tinware on, he just wants to remind me, I reckon on a beetle it would be esential. :spin:

Proven this many times myself, but basically if you leave ANY of the tinware off and the engine will run hotter.... period.

If you're only doing short little runs (eg hillclimbs or lapdash) then not having the piece above the flywheel (front plate I think it's called) or the one above the exhaust (breast plate) plus the one under the pulley probably aren't critical... but then they don't weigh much either, so if you've got 'em I reckon put em on.

Also there are two little vertical pieces at the back of #2 and #4 that you need to have... they cause the air to go right around the cylinders.

About the only piece I'd ever leave off is the one ABOVE the pulley, and that's only cos I can never find one that's clean and fits !!!

It still blows me away the amount of bugs around you see missing the breast plate, one of the most important pieces for stopping the fan sucking in all the hot air off the heads and muffler.

All these non-vw savvy mechanics must just thing meh I can see the ground in every other cars engine bay, over the back fence you go.

You can always pick which bugs will be missing them, it's usually always convertibles or old shitters with carerra kits and a whale tail.

YES.. YES.. YES..
You need them ALL....

ALL the HOT AIR MUST remain below the tinware... that is what the rubber seal is for....

Basically.. You should NOT be able to see the road when looking at the engine... ALL holes should be blocked off..
using anything You can fit in the holes...

the clever guy that designed the tin ware was no fol sit back and look inside the engine bay there should be no gap between the sides and engine,the idea was to only get cold air from the top of the engine lid not the hot stuff below the tinware
