Bug Struts

Hi Guys,

I have a off raod buggy with strut front end 1972 I think.
We have cut and moved the base plates for the springs to get a little more lift.
But now the shock absorder bit is stuffed, can these be serviced or replaced with new ones.
Without having to do the spring mods again.
Brett

Beetle struts run a insert in the leg. You need to take the strut out, remove the spring (use spring compressors). Once that is done, at the top of the body is a large cap. You can use either a large monkey wrench or I think there is a tool to look into the indents on the top. This unscrew and the shcok body comes straight out. You cna buy this in vrious specs and brands from VW shops (in stock) or from a general parts supplier (who will need to order them in).

How much have you raised the perches by?

You are probably having the same problem as people who lower but the other way round, the inserts are topping out violently if your going over bumps hard or doing any jumping and such.

If its just a bush basher toy it may not be worth putting new ones in.

I've probably got a few old sets laying around i could probbaly dig up.

Thanks Guys.

I will strip things down and have a close look.
Joel I will PM you if your post is an offer to sell me some second hand ones. I think we increased the spring rate by 1".

Regards Brett
