Leaking oil from CV area

My trike IRS, left hand side has been throwing grease or oil from the CV area and it lands on the new exhaust system. Had a mechanic look at it and he unscrewed the 6 or so allen key bolts of a plate and lined the bolts with silicone.

The problem persists. any ideas? and a solution? rubber boots seem fine and cant see any excess oil in that area- just a smear.

if its oil then the output shaft seal has to be replaced

If its black moly grease then maybe the CV rubber boot has split and need replacing

I often see inferior or too much grease to be the cause if no split in the boot is found.

Hi
putting silicone on the bolts won't do anything...
there is a flat seal in the centre of the piece that the inner cv joint bolts to, that stops oil from the gearbox..
also an outer oil seal on the shaft coming from the gearbox..
was this outer seal lubricated when fitted..?
as they can wear down until the oil from the gearbox flows thru lubricating the seal... can seep oil there..

My Beetle throws moly grease from the inner CV Joints as I over filled them with grease.. ..!!

Lee

PS:
I presume You don't like the smell of burning oil or grease?

thanks guys.

will get the boys at Volksplace on the 9th Jan to fix it...they are doing the bushes and wheel align.

Yeh, dont mind the smell of burning oil/grease but degreasing the muffler has to be done regularly.

Hi

I have to degrease the chassis under the inner cv joints where the grease accumulates..
takes a long time for the grease to leak out
but then I don't do many klms... lol

grease must come out from between the metal ends on the cv joints.. no leaking boots...

Your trike must be the Best one I've ever seen....

excellent job....

Thanks Lee. Yeh, our pride and joy and much planning on the roof and ea81 conversion to get it to this stage. It's a camera magnet...and great to ride.

When I fitted the ea81 I checked the transaxle oil and was full. Auto trans gasket replaced, filter clean and oil replace so I hoped for no oil leaks. But we are talking about a 40-45 year old driveline and the seals condition unknown. Best to get them sorted while they have their heads under it rebushing the suspension.

have a good xmas mate.
