What do I need to add to this motor?
Hello all. I'm getting close to getting the 1970 beetle rego'd but I'm not sure what I need to add to the motor. Below are a couple of shots I took
so you may be able to help tell me what cooling tins or whatever I may need to get? Thanks everyone for all your help.

Rear apron, heater hoses attached to the shroud, would definitely move the fuel filter and maybe get braided hoses (common to have engine fires) or
get good insurance, could not see the regulator (attached to the alternator) and probably mounted somewhere behind the fan shroud but just check, not
sure if you checked the points but would have a look but if engine runs OK than probably OK.
Jetzt mache ich meinen Karmann und Käfer zusammen.

Hi
The generator is mounted 90 degrees out, the terminals should point of the the right side of the car and the earth screw should be at the top.

The plastic fuel filters work great, but perish / age rapidly in a hot engine bay - and ultimately crack resulting in fuel fires and general
nastiness..... Burns about as many bugs as battery fires does. Try putting it under the car just after here the hard fuel line exits the chassis.

As others have said - rear engine tin (breast plate), heater hoses (connect from fan shroud each side to those holes down near exhaust), ditch plastic
fuel filler, turn generator around 90 deg clockwise.
Also carby looks pretty grotty... check that there's no fuel leaks around it, and give it a good wipe over with a rag before getting your rego check
done.
Finally... Mudgee get's pretty cold in winter, yeah ??? Should be a hose running from the bottom inlet of the air cleaner (yellow thing) down to
below the engine... it's known as a warm air intake, and is there to help engine run nicely in colder weather.
Oh and Norbert - with 12V genny normally have the regulator mounted under the back seat, opposite to the battery... but definitely check it's bolted
down nice, and insulation is all good !!!

I hope no-one's been driving it like that....the engine will be toast.
The main piece of tin missing is the rear breast plate, but the pulley tin appears cut to install a full flow oil fitting into the case, so it should
probably should be replaced too. No holes should be left anywhere in the tinware, to effectively seal the air out of the engine bay. That way the
cooling fan will draw in only cool air from under the rear window, instead of hot air from under the engine that has already cooled the engine
once.
Heater pipes could get blocked or hoses fitted preferebly if the heater boxes are fitted to the exhaust as air flow helps cool the heater box
itself.
Generator has a regolator mounted under the rear seat in a later model bug like this.
Fuel filter....well new hoses would be recommended, use the correct 5mm size, so VW line is best IMO.

Did not realise about the regulator positioning. Is that a better place to mount it. Was going to mount my battery and regulator in the engine bay as
many people do. After thinking about it heat would probably affect the battery but should not make a huge difference to the regulator.

It's not gonna do anything other than look pretty.
The 1500 preheat flaps ones like this ran off a cable connected to the thermostat flaps.
The operating cable is missing, as is the stove pipe connected to the head and also I bet this engine is missing a working thermostat.

Norbert - Ghia's are different than bugs... not as much room in the engine bay ya see. I'm gonna keep my Ghia engine bay layout standard - don't
think that heat will really be such an issue.
Joel - good point - didn't look closely enough to see the cable wasn't there - doh ! As well as being pretty, the warm air intake hose would at
least block one of the holes in the breast plate I guess !!!

Oh - one more for ya glenroy.
The rain catcher (black thing on the underside of the engine lid)... later bugs never had them, so while 1970's had 'em standard they're kinda
optional.
I've tried both ways and found she ran cooler with the rain catcher removed, and never had any issue with the amount of rain that came through the
vents.
Not an issue for rego of course, but something can play around with later maybe.
