[FS - QLD] 1971 Type 3 Wagon brilliant original condition SOLD
I am new to this forum and on behalf of a friend I am offering for sale this 1971 model type 3 wagon.
She is a 4/1971 model and as you can see from the pictures is in fantastic condition for a 40 year old. I hope I look as good as that when I'm 40!
The fascinating thing about this car is the service history. It comes with a huge folder full of receipts for work done during the 90's and 00's
totalling many thousands of dollars. Obviously the various owners have truly been enthusiasts and we do need the car to go to a good home where she
will be given the same love as she has already been shown. She has her original glovebox manual and service history book in the vinyl folder and
someone has even logged every petrol fill up and service/adjustment from 1974 to 1994 to track fuel economy. All of this history goes with the car.
There is also a box of spare parts including hubcaps, switches, bulbs, tail light lenses, distributor cap and much more.
Mechanically the car drives beautifully and the engine runs well. It has the original 1600 twin carb motor and 4 speed gearbox. Starts very easilly.
The idle speed does seem a little high compared to other VW's I've owned but this should be simple to adjust. As the car has not been regularly
driven for 5 years, just started every few weeks to keep the battery charged, I would suggest a tune up anyway. It was always regularly serviced prior
to this so should be in good order. Brakes are good and she has drum rears and disc fronts, all 4 tyres are good and the spare is old but serviceable.
I drove her 100km from where she was stored and she held her own on the highway against much younger models and ran like a dream all the way there.
I'm by no means a VW expert but she does drive better than many newer cars I've owned. And certainly attracts more attention and waves from passers
by too!
Body is really good, nice paint, colour is moss green, floor pan appears rust free from underneath, with a fresh coat of underbody paint it would look
as new again. There is some minor rust coming through around the rear of the guttering and the side windows (was stored under a tarp and water pooled
on the rear guttering) but any competent panel expert could sort these in a weekend, I prefer for someone to see what they are getting so have not
touched this as yet. In comparison to other type 3's Ive seen around (and that isn't too many) this car would have to be one of the better examples.
Interior is very good too, the original black carpet is showing signs of age but is still presentable, black vinyl seats are in great condition and
there are seat covers in the front to keep you from hurting in the hot weather. In the back of the wagon the original rear load mat made of striped
rubber is still there but has a lot of cracking (has been taped from underneath, but hey, 40 years old and original so looks pretty good). Roof lining
is good with no rips or sagging, the window seals are good but the door rubbers could do with replacement as they are showing their age but still work
ok. The dash is very good with a couple of minor cracks tastefully repaired. Someone has fitted a radio cassette player but thankfully under the dash
so if you choose to remove it you can keep the vehicle original. Under the bonnet, the original cardboard liner is still there and in great condition,
original jack, handle, hubcap puller, plug spanner and tyre operated washer bottle are still there. Everything electrical works except one park light
bulb needs replacing. Battery is relatively new. As a 1971 model she still has the "Wolfsburg" style steering wheel and horn ring for the classic
look.

with buyers regarding delivery by negotiation. With a tidy up and some attention to detail this car will last another 40 years and more. I want this
car to go to someone who will appreciate it and look after it (this was stipulated by the owner) and so if you want an unmolested unmodified vehicle
this is well worth a look.
Does not have registration currently but can provide all records to the new owner. Odometer shows 500 odd miles but clearly by the logbooks she has
seen this reading a couple of times before. The owner has suggested they would like to try and sell for somewhere in the $4000 to $5000 price range,
by all means come and have a look at the car and see what you think. I'm not an expert on these or their value but I've seen cars in far worse
condition asking for more money than this. Inspections most welcome, I can also email more pictures by request but can only post 3 on here.

Definately worth the asking price, an unmolested 40 year old vw is quite rare.

Thanks for the feedback. The owner is quite sad to have to sell the car but something like this should be driven not sitting around. No good having a
manual car and an automatic license.

Sorry car has now been sold. Betsy has a new owner. I had a feeling she wouldn't stay single for long. I hope her new family enjoys her as much as
the current and previous owners.
