Helping a fallow dubber
About five weeks ago there was a karmann ghia broken down on the side of the bruce highway near the Cooroy turn off, i stopped and asked the lady what
was wrong and she said the red light was on and the engine was still idling, i could see that it was very hot, I got here to shut it down and
procedded to ask her if she had a spare fan belt and tools to change it, neither was carried in the car, i had a spare belt but it did not fit the
ghia, took her to Cooroy and sorced the correct belt, when fitting the belt there was not enough shims so i went home and took them of another car and
finnally got her going, the outcome of this was a promise of a bottle of red wine which i never expected as i normally stop in such cases, she took my
address and went on her way, as of yet nothng has materialised, why promise anything if you have no intention of carrying it out, i just makes me not
bother stopping next time. it could have been a expensive exercise for her if i had not come along and stopped the engine.

I think we (Australians - correction > people whom live in Australia) have become an unappreciative bunch of mugs. People are only to willing to
let you help and say thank you whilst you are there, but once out of site they just quickly forget the effort that others go to.
I for one, met a fellow veedubber up at Redhead (north of Foster) just for a coffee and we had a great chat and he even took me for a ride in his
Manx. Just in conversation, I mentioned I had a VW part that I had no use for and I would send it up. I still have full intentions of sending it,
but have been back home over 5 weeks and still haven't got around to boxing it up and posting.
My point is, I think today with our busy lives (things should be easier with all our technology) that time flies and we always seem to put things off
until later (maybe I'm just lazy).
I'm sure the lady really appreciated your help and I'm guessing christmas time is busy for everyone, so hopefully you will get a thank you soon.
Also, my hat comes off to you for stopping and helping 
Most people drive right by without a second thought

You know you did a good thing vwo60, same thing has happed to me heaps, though not when helping a duber, in those situations I am the helpee not the
helper  but I'll still do it again, we do it because we enjoy it not
for the tangible reward but for the good feeling reward (though you do say that you didn't expect the wine) top marks to you for going so far out of
your way.
PS Just this morning I came across a late model Toyota 4x4 stuck across an intersection, bloke in front of me stopped and sat there in his car,
another fella coming into the intersection from the other direction had stopped and was endevouring to push the vehicle off the road but he couldn't
move it so I pulled to the side and ran (fast walk) over to help just in time to hear him ask if the car had the h/brake off and in neutral, "it's
got the hand brake off but it's in gear" says the young red P plate bird in the drivers seat, big laugh from 2 old fellas pushing and all was good.
Felt good to help and even better when the sweet young thing climbed out in her mini skirt (I think she had a skirt on  )
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

i'VE No objection to helping out where i can, but when you help a local dubber i'd like to think they would return the effort. but quite often they
don't. that sucks!!

Obviously I'm the only one chuckling at the idea of a "fallow dubber" .... so much that I wonder if the typo in the subject line was
intentional...

Just the look of appreciation is enough for me i don't expect to get anything out of helping any one in trouble. If something does materialize well
and good i just get a kick out of solving the problem and hopefully one day if i am in the same situation some one will help me.

I agree.
The other thing I often do if they do offer something is tell them they don't owe me anything, they have to pay it forward, that is, they now owe
someone else a favour.
That makes them think, and I hope it will go on helping other people then.

good on you for pulling over not may people would back in 06 i think at dubs by
the pub my dad broke down in the bugno petrol of course but so many other
fellow dubbers pulled over to offer a hand and that why i like fellow cause most of them are nice
and will help you out just like myself

You don't know what else is going on in her life! For all we know she may be sitting down with her solicitor drawing up a new will so she can leave
it to you if she drops dead from all the stress in her life.
I must ask this question...Why did you stop? Why did you go out of your way to help? Was is because you wanted to help or figured you may be
rewarded?
The fact is, you have no idea what is going on in her life, and all you can think about is a broken promise. I know this is going to sound harsh, but
what was your real motivation?

If your motivation was to help her out, then thats what you did.
I can tell you one thing about people, and that is "actions speak louder than words".
What you did was commendable, don't let her inaction piss you off!
Only you know why you stopped and helped?
If you take what I write as having a go at you, when I clearly stated "no malice intended" an then state "don't question my motive again" you
really have missed the point! I guess I'm just trying to help out a "fellow dubber" too.
