Valve Clearances
Hi guys,
just wondering what are the best valve clearances for a 1640 TP running twin webers?

Hi Brad
they are all .006" inlet and exhaust...
best done before the car is driven first time that day...
as its supposed to be a cold engine...

best to have spare tappet cover gaskets too...

My first VW mechanic was factory trained. He said that the inlets should be adjusted to 6 thou and the exhausts to 8 thou. The reason being that no
matter how hot the engine gets, the exhaust clearance will not close up and you will never burn out an exhaust valve.
I've been doing that since 1963 and I've never had a burned out valve.
The engine will sound a little tappety, but it doesn't intrude.
I suggest 6 thou inlets and 8 thou exhausts.

VW used to recommend 4 thou years ago, I've run all my cars at 6 thou and have never had a burnt valve either.
