Steering box rebuild kit
I have 3 old German type 1 steering boxes, all of them with play I'm looking to rebuild the best of the 3 and wondering if and where i can get the
parts. i bought a brand new 1 a few years ago and have had nothing but trouble at first it was tight the and now is as bad as the old German ones.

But ring VVDS 02-9789-1777 they will know
It would be strange if they are worn is the adjusting screw all the way in ???

Try T3D in the UK. Good website n they specialist in T3s. If similar to a T1 box then only the worm gear is available but bearings should be able to
be sourced from a bearing supplier as the originals are FAG.

Had a look for ya and not even the big USa and UK vendors stock the worm drive anymore but so long as the gears aren't badly worn then it'll be
fine. If they are worn then new bearings won't do a thing.

There was a NOS type 3 steering box on ebay US a month or so ago. Was cheap around 250. I should of bought it
there is this one though.

I know super beetle steering boxes are different for rhd than lhd. If the type 3 takes the same as the beetle then buying from the USA may not be a
good idea if standard beetles are different too.

With the beam front end the boxes are the same. It's the pittman arm that is different. So just =use your old pitman arm if you get a new box and
it'll be fine.

Well finally pulled the old box apart. Think it gone be ok, no pitting on the screw shaft where the bearings go and no play on the guide wheel. So
after a good clean up i think its back together it goes and on to the car. Fingers crossed.

Well i showed it to the engineer next to my work and he gave it the all clear. So now im wondering what grease to use when putting it back together.

^ correct.
Its a super ultra extreme pressure grease, but only for slow moving parts as it is super thick. Commonly used in the mining industry on their machine
and earth moving vehicles. I recon its ideal for steering boxes.
I used some from work to do the poly bushes on my bomb. Dam good stuff.
Looks like metallic grey paste.
