Engine & Carb Combo Question


Alrighty,

I have a 1600cc twin port motor. What are some well known good carb setups?

Should I stick with the dual carb root and get dual Webber 40 IDF's? Or do I go to a single Webber 40 IDF?

Do I not do Webber's and go back to a stock Solex single carb setup?

I'd like to get as much "bang for my buck" so to speak. I don't want to spend over a thousand dollars on just a carb setup, that's money I could spend on the suspension that is definitely getting tired...

Any motor combinations that people have seen, had themselves or have heard of that work fine, that's what I want to know!

Any help would be great!

My main concern, are dual Webber 40 IDF's overkill for a stock 1600cc?

I can get dual 40's easy, it's just a matter of whether others have run them on a stock 1600cc or have had a good time with them.
As you're all probably aware by now, I haven't really had any good luck with the EMPI 34's (albeit I have them running a lot better now than before).

What do you reckon?

Are you wanting to increase the engine capacity at a later stage or will you be staying 1600cc ?

40's will work or a cheaper twin carb option would be kadrons :tu:

If you're after Kadron's, i may be selling mine a few weeks.

I run Kadron's on a stock 1600 and they gave it more 'oomph'. I was running a single 34 pict3 and it was just worn out and giving me intake leaks at every seal. So i spoke to Rod Penrose and he sold me some Kadrons. I'm planning to upgrade in a few weeks to a bigger motor so i will be upgrading my carbs too.

I would recommend the Dual 40mm Kadrons too.

They are a set and forget carby. Once you get the adjustments right you don't have to touch them for a long time. Mine are working beautiful. And I have a friend in Rocky that runs them on a stock 1600 in his super bug, it works great too.

Already getting those kadrons, just have to wait till shokwave2 strips his motor down and then when they come in the post they'll go straight on and I'll spend the day tunin them to get them perfect.

I'm also wondering what people think about the serpentine belt pulley kits that you can buy?
Do they improve the noise of the engine, like, do they quieten the engine a lot or what's the go?
Worth the money or not?

They're really just for looks. The standard V-belt is fine.

Going to just get a new crankshaft pulley then, the one currently on is a little bent...

Agreed Bizarre.

I don't want one that is poor quality and will fall off or anything like that while I'm driving.
I'm thinking a Jaycee billet one from vwparts.net or if they are sold anywhere here in Australia, then from there.

V-belt is fine yes but rib belts run alot smoother which is why modern cars all run them.
on a type1 engine that reduces alot of tinware rattles, noise and vibration.
A friend fitted one to his bug, I was surprised how much quieter and smoother it idled.

THe downside is they don't slip which on a high revving motor can lead to the fan go kablamo.

Most V belt kits I've seen have an aluminium generator pulley, these will flog out at the K way over time.

So, no to a serpentine belt pulley system and yes to a Jaycee billet crank pulley?

I guess I won't be revving the crap out of the engine, but every now and then I'd want to go for a little bit of a blip.
Could I get away with just the serpentine belt system? She's just my daily, and it isn't like I'll be racing her or dragging her. Not with a stock 1600 anyway...

I'm thinking smooth idle and quieter idle makes for a few good positives that's for sure...
I've seen them on quite a few bugs (even drag ones), so I'm sure they're not that bad that they'll make the fan go kaboom?

On two of my cars i run a saco aluminium top pulley and they have been on there for a few years now with no problems, you will only have problems if they do not fit the shaft correctly or the nut is not done up tight, i had to heat mine up to fit them as they had a interference on the shaft.

How did you get on with those carbs? Was there a noticeable improvement? I am thinking of the same setup but any info is good info. Cheers
