Air in a 77 Kombi


Hey guys have anyone fitted an Air unit into a 2 ltr Kombi I need some ideas

seen one looked ok it used a modern rotary compressor he said it didnt take much power to run

Not many busses sold with A/C new but very very occasionally I see a bay window with original A/C still fitted.

Only over head consoles though, I've never seen one in aus with an under dash console though.

There was a kombi wreck (project apparently :rolleyes:) on ebay recently, even the type 4 engine had the old piston style York compressor bolted to it still.

I was over at the subi shop several months back and a subi powered bay was up on the hoist.
It had original A/C so I grabbed a pic of the condenser.

WHen it was converted to Subaru engine though it was never hooked back up.
It wouldn't be hard to make up mounts and hang a modern serpentine condenser with some slim line fans the same way.

You could easy mount an under dash console too, they are availible new with various facias on them.

The main problem you have with a type 4 engine is the compressors are mounted to face the opposite way (pulley to the front of the car) so they get spun backwards.

Just for anyone who has never seen one they have a mounting location of the left side of the shroud and the belt is driven off a pulley fitted to the inside of the fan

Rotary ones may be a different story, I'll have to get back to you.

Or you could fab up brackets and a pulley system to mount one above the engine like this:

Thats not an original AC....That would be a DPD unit from the US of A. They didn't have "factory" AC it was all aftermarket.

I didn't say factory, I said original.

Original being dealer fitted when the cars were sold new.

The Don Dixon setups were actually sold by VW in US

Dunno which ones were more common here though, the Volkswagen product corp ones seem to be what I've seen more of.

Trying to source the original fan with the pulley when i had mine was impossible (12 years ago) i made an extension flange with a pulley on it that protruded from the fan and mounted the compressor from the top,similar to the picture above but the altenator was left in the original position. The backward facing compressors are a pain in the arse,the belts are thin and break often and are a pain to replace. If i was doing it again with a VW engine i would use the original fan and mount the compressor and altenator as they are in the picture above. A lot easier and more reliable. Use a modern compressor and the power drain wont be very noticable!!!

There was no other info on that one sorry.
I got no idea why it's running 2 alternators either but how the compressor is mounted is a good way to do it.

wouldnt be hard to fab up a pulley the mounts to the 3 fan bolts
