If you ever concider a new speedo, these guys are the go
http://www.speedhut.com/gauge_products-gauge_type-speedometer_GPS.htm
I have just ordered a 4 inch GPS speedo and 3 3/8 tacho from these guys and have to say there sales and service is some of the best I have come
accross.
AND THEY ARE ALL 15% OFF RIGHT NOW!!!!
payed only $40US to ship both to rural NSW
If you have tyres that are too small, too big, welded up the speedo hole in your spindle, didn't have one to start with, your vw is now so quick that
it winds off the clock.
These guys are for you, quick run down on what they offer,
- MPH and KM speedos
- with/without hibeam and indicators
- up to 300km/h options
- choice of custom colours, graffics, backliting, colours and styles of CNC bezels, fonts of the numbering and you can even send them a PDF of your
own graffics!
All at very low extra cost and many options are FREE!
- speedos that include temp, tacho or fuel gauges in the same unit
- trip meter
- odometer
- elevation
- time
- 0-100km time
- quater mile time
- only 1.100 inch total depth of the guage
- antenna included
The 4 inch should be really close to fitting in the original speedo hole and will update with some photos in a week and a bit when I get mine,

Guess the same thing that happens to the GPS, it cuts out. Which is a pain if you drive though the sydney tunnels alot I guess, which for me is, um..
.. . . .. . never. (are there speed cameras in there or just at the entry?)
But I would rather my speedo be wrong a few minutes of the day than all of the time

Let us know how long it stays in the car for. The GPS antenna location is a PITA. On a late model car you can sit it on top of the dash. On a beetle
it aint that easy.
I would like to try one of these. The speedo has a calibration mode, so you can adjust it for different size wheels.

I'm wondering about the antenna position, I've noticed that my Garmin works even with the unit placed in the glovebox of the Soob, as the antenna
for the Garmin is attached then obviously the antenna is in what could be described as a "shielded" position when in the glovebox, that being the
case would the antenna for this speedo need to be out on top of the dash or could it be hidden away out of sight, my speedo finaly shit itself
yesterday (not a standard VW unit, a VDO unit about 75 mm diam) it's almost certainly had it as the odo and trip meter have been failing on and off
for a while and yesterday the needle went haywire then stoped altogether, may be the drive at the front wheel (again !) or the cable but it needed to
be recalibrated anyway as it was no where near acurate.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

Yeah I looked at those too, they are one hell of a flashy speedo aren't they? But are only 3 3/8 round.
As far as the antenna is concerned, the bonnet on my car is fibreglass,so no biggy and the way these guys where with there customer service I'm
willing to bet for a few dollars they would put a longer cable on that antenna for you (though its 15ft anyways) that way you can mount it on your
parcel shelf where there is a will there is a way
Been doing alittle bit of mearsuring and looks that the 4" speedo bezel will fit inside of the orginal chrome surround of the vw speedo, so an
adapter will need to be made, but thats no biggy either

wonder how long it takes to pick up enough satellites to be accurate.
i know the one i use to work on in the navy took half and hour.
also if the antenna is eclipsed or gets an obstructed view how long does it take to reacquire??
just something to think about from working on similar items

There are plenty of pics on there web site, the very first in my post will send you straight to speedos. Go to home and surf there site abit, click
on desired speedo or other gauge for that matter and go to the bottom of the screen. from there you can play with colour and graffic templates and
will give you a total cost of your speedo. Bet you spend your whole lunchbreak playing with the opions avalible. There are also youtube links to videos showing how long it takes to pick up on the satalites.(what? You
don't take a minute to let you engine warm, close the garage door and kiss the missus good bye in the morning?)
Otherwise, wait a week and a bit and will have photos and videos of mine hooked up

the GPS I use for work can take several min to pick up a signal, even longer if you are not moving.

You're a Volkswagen owner for starters
I'm also wondering about these GPS speedos accuracy on steep enough hills, probably wouldn't go out by much but you never know.
The digital speedo in my bug was calibrated by GPS is dead accurate to the KM/h with my GPS on fairly level roads but I've noticed when I go up and
down steep enough hills you can start to see the GPS speed dropping by a couple of KMs, obviously not compensating for changes in elevation straight
away.

We've done three in customer splitties thus far. here is the latest one (with programmable fuel gauge)
Our mounting rings (via DAS Resto Parts) will be available in a week or so (will fit beetle and split with or without stock chrome bezel):
They are 4in by the way.

Great! I knew sooner or later somebody would pipe in and say they have used one before. Looks good.
I also looked at the speedo with the fuel gauge in it, but decided against it because it only has the 260km option, mine is lucky to make 100 on a
good day If they had one that only went to 120km I would have bought
that. The adapter looks pretty much what I have drawn up ( without the raised section) It is only temporary till I build a custom dash, but was mainly
interested in how they look and fit in the original hole.
Thanks Das dubber

So I got my package from speed hut in the mail during the week, nicely packed and good looking gauges.
I made up the adapter from some 1/4" aluminium that i had and the gauge sits in the original hole very nicely, even without the step in it.
You get alot of wire with each gauge because each one came with a single tail and a wired multi tail for up to 8 gauges, sure would save some time if
I had eight gauges
shows the gap around the gauge to the dash with and without the chrome ring

260km/hr speedo should do daimo!! Definately looking at these for sure as it may turn out to cheaper than buying and installing a data logger digital
dash and all the necessary sensors!
After all Daimo Col would only need the 160km/hr speedo as he only has a type 1 engine hahahahahaha

Hmm, would these be mountable in a 1303 Dash?
Really keen to get one as my speedo is way out and would love to have one that was correct...
Also, with one of these, how does one know how much fuel is in the tank? Or will that be a separate gauge altogether?

sebastien, check out a few post higher in this thread. Dasdubber posted some pictures of this gauge withe the fuel gauge, indicator light and high
beam light built in. So all that is left is for oil and alt lights.
As for fitting into a 1303 dash, I have no idea what so ever cause I have never played with one, nore have any really idea what it llookes like?

heres mine, fitted yesterday. no fuel guage, but does have indicators and highbeam lights
test run this morning, ill keep you posted.
the size and fit are nice, and the GPS has a hotwire that keeps it live for up to 4 hrs.
other than that its only about a min to aquire signal. which is plenty of time to fire the car up, back out your drive and head down the road.
