Metallic Pearl Paint Help!!!!!
Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advise on a repaint job I've just done.
I just painted the front bumper on my WRX which is a dark blue metallic, the guy who mixed the paint up for me said it had pearl in it.
When I put the colour coat on I thought it didn't look right, however I thought once I put the clear coat on it'll change.
Well it's painted and polished and it looks mainly purple and only blue from certain angles, simply put it looks shit.
What I want to know is did I do something wrong, is it possible to stuff it up so that the colour looks totally different or is it just a case of the
colour being mixed wrong from the start.

how was it applyed first up? did u use a rattle can or a spray gun?
the way it is put on can have a massive affect on now the colour looks, simple things like temp,air pressure can change it to.
With out seeing it its near impossible to say what the issue is so i cant really say if its a mistint or the way you applyed it. i will say if you did
it with rattle cans then that will be a big part of the the problem if not all.
if you can offer some more info i mite be able to assist with more usefull insight ..

Thanks for the reply's.
It was applied with a spray gun, I think it's a S77 gun, 50 psi air pressure.
I did give the colour coat a light wet sand with 800 wet and dry before applying the clear. The clear was applied about a week later.

well with out seeing it i am just taking a stab in the dark but it sounds like it mite not have been mixed correctly.
i have found that the main line shops like auto pro,supercheap autobarn etc uses cheap brands of paint and there colour matching are not the best as
they don't have the resources to match them properly..
your much better off going to a paint supplier who deals with one of the auto refinish brands, they can mix up the colour for you and it will be a
better match. they will also be able to supply u a data sheet for the paint with the right air pressures to use and a aplication guide..
sorry i cant be much more help but its very hard to give a correct answer with out seeing the paint work ..i hope this puts u on the right road to
getting it sorted...

Thanks for your reply. I can take a photo tomorrow if that helps, but I guess you really need to see it in the flesh.
I just had a look at the stirring stick I used and the dried paint looks blue, at least more blue that the bumper.
I think it's probably a combination of paint colour and amateur application that's caused my problem.
Once the car is registered I'll take it to a mob in Slacks Creek that just do Auto paint and colour matching, then I can only blame myself.

Here's a pic I took this morning, unfortunately it looks heaps better in the pic than in real life. Here the colour looks ok however in normal
daylight it looks purple.

hey mate,
You shouldnt wet sand the color and that possible caused the problem. Shoot the base coat and then clear it...then cut and buff the clearcoat.
Was the color mixed to a code or matched from a sample?
Air pressure between 25-30psi...1.4tip
The pro's like Helbus will offer better help for sure..

This is very true! My elder brother over the last couple of years has used the same paint mixture on his celica, and had to do touch ups, repairs etc
at least 4 or 5 times, often buying a new can of paint getting it mixed each time. its a basic flat acrylic, nothing fancy. But we ended up with 3 or
so different bloody shades!

Thanks mate, yeah I think that was the problem or at least part of it, I've read heaps of problems on Subi forums with this colour.
The colour was mixed to the code.
