Speedo Noise
Hi all. I started driving my type 3 this morning after about 3ks the speedo started to making that noise (wa wa wa wa)
I have had it do the same thing in the past but can't remember how to get rid of it. I think it just needs a bit of a lube where the cable goes in to
the speedo.Please help.

Bit of lube might help as would checking for kinks/bends that shouldn't be in the cable, but when I've had the noise in the past it's always been
the drive cable on the way out.
Leave it go long enough and the cable will usually fail... and then noise solved when you put the new cable in !!!

Yes, the cable is binding in the outer piece..
take the cable off the speedo and pour a few drops of oil in there.. [very slowly]
that should stop the noise but I would buy a new cable as that one is on its way out..
when they are real bad, the needle will flicker a bit..

I have that noise in the kombi, its been doing it for over a year on and off.... i find if i turn the stereo up the noise goes away

My Lbug has doing this for a while now. It makes the horrible noise and the needle flicks like crazy.
It started out doing it very occasionally. Over the last few years it has gotten more frequent.
No radio to turn up, and it is so loud when it starts, I doubt a radio would drown it out!
Disconnected the cable and lubed it a few months ago - noise went away.
Noise came back last week. I am starting to suspect the speedo itself.
I have it apart again today and I have filled the top of the cable with CRC and I am running the bottom with a drill to help pull the lube in.
Surprisingly, the level at the top is not dropping!
This makes me think the cable may be the problem still, and the lube is not getting to the dry bit.
But I can easily believe the speedo would be awfully dry after 40 years of Aussie summers.
And I don't want to pull it apart if I don't have to (being the lazy sod I am!)
Any thoughts?

Had a fiddle today. Cable seems to turn okay on it's own.
Hooked up the speedo and it was much harder to turn.
Took the speedo cable off and tried turning the speedo input with a jewellers screwdriver.
Definitely stiff to turn.
Looks like the speedo is the culprit after all.
