clutch issues on 1200 to 1835 swap (job happening now)
Hey all,
Have just done an engine swap on my partners 62.
Had the old 1200 gearbox, ground out the bellhousing, created the flywheel clearance, swapped the 6v to 12v starter.
Fitted a high performance clutch from VW centre in WA (supplied and trusted) to suit the early style throw out bearing.
Bolted the engine in, running fine. no unusual noises. all very sweet.
had a bit of slack on the clutch cable visually from the wingnut to the leaver.
pressed the clutch and really felt like we had nothing.
could swing the release bearing arm from the outside of the gearbox to about -40degrees before it seemed like it was touching anything..?
i tentioned the cable to about 3/4 its potential length. pulling the arm to about -25degrees. but seemed like i was going to have nothing any which
way.
I pulled the motor out suspecting to find the release bearing had dropped or the flat plate on the clutch had come unclipped.. but everything seems
okay.?!
Anyone know what might be up?
Do i need a shorter clutch cable??
I mean that arm leaning back on a -40degree constant seemed strange to me?
This job is happening right now, so standing by if anyone else is up at such a ridiculous hour.

does the pressure plate have the ring in the centre?

x2, sounds like no running ring on the pressure plate, the early trans requires this. damn trusted suppliers. 
Clutch lever that the cable attaches to will be near vertical, and is in adjustment with about 2mm of fwd movement before the throw-out contacts the
running ring.

You said, "to suit the early style throw out bearing". I take it from this you have the removable pad on the pressure plate, but did you get a new
throw out bearing that may be for the later style. Apparently they are about 15mm difference in thickness overall.

So the award for strange knowledge goes to camo for his 15mm thickness on the later style throw out bearing.
Swapped it, and readjusted.. and i must say (matt> I still had a great
deal of adjustment requirement before i felt the throw out contact the pressure plate.
now about -25degrees. But everything has been operating just fine so even though im well over half way on my cable adjustment, the clutch feels great
and is highly operatable.
She is a quick ole' girl now, may i just say it.
happy times.

try ajusting your clutch arm that comes out of your gearbox a couple of degrees or even put washers for a temporary fix but i done this for a year and
buy a new clutch cable i had to do this to mine.

^ you can't turn the arm on the shaft. the splines are only on one side of the shaft.

aww yeah thats right but i did have to use some washers for a while until i could be bothered to fix it properly
