Dyno Day - Proof and discovery!

Ok folks...

Who is interested in another dyno day in Sydney?

WITH A VOLKSWAGEN SPECIALIST!

A chance to show that you do have what you say, or even better to find out when you have no idea.

Come on guys, show your interest.
Not every day you get the chance to use a chassis dyno in the shop of a real Volkswagen enthusiast/specialist.

By the way, the price will be less than $50 per car...
Put away a couple of dollars a week between now and then...

It'll probably be around December...

Dyno, VW specialist... hard to beat.

Custom Bugs and Buses will have their dyno running in a couple of weeks. I mentioned the idea to him while he was putting my bottom end together.

If I can let him know the level of interest he'll robably make it a goer...

An all VW Dyno Day at a VW specialist - couldn't want more could you...

Well if the numbers are right it will be even lower than the 50 bucks and it's done by a VOLKSWAGEN SPECIALIAST with a brand new chassis dyno.

They are at Penrith.

Reason why im not happy is first they bad mouthed my car/ECU saying it was running too lean and trying to sell me their dodgy ecu's:pukeOettinger Germany have been working with audi/vw engines for over 50 years so i think they know their stuff than some little Aussie Garage

Secondly the dyno read out was too high - this was the result of pursuit mode which i dont know why they did it this way!
I got 120kw at the wheels which equates to 170kw at the engine which isnt right, my cars not a 170kw car as ive driven a 170kw A3 and its marginally faster than my car.

Apparently Pursuit mode adds 10kw which means my car has around 110kw which equates to around 160kw at the wheels which sounds right :)

Now i have to spend another $50 on a dyno to get a proper read out - luckily I put a bigger fuel pressure regulator im curious to see the gains i got from it

My Audi mates got their cars dyno'd at C&V and we very happy and their figures were spot on also :thumb

Which shop is it in Penrith? Is it well equipped with fans etc?

May bring my other Audi mates too if they are welcome too :)

It's Custom Bugs & Buses at Penrith. Haven't seen the dyno yet it arrives next week apparently.

Who knows if we get the interest and we can have the dyno day we might even get to see the CBB Racing supercharged bug on the rollers at full noise.

I think thats pretty harsh Costa. I've been to a few dyno's & I thought that SAS were pretty good. They answered all our questions & the dyno operator seemed genuinly concerned that your car was leaning out & could cause damage. For $50 it's a great warning if u ask me.
Have u had the car back on another dyno to see if what he said was even close to the truth? I would, even if it's another $50, it's better than thousands of dollars of engine damage.
I was very happy with the service & CT & I & few others are going back there in a couple of weeks.
Regardless of what 'mode' the dyno is on, u always use the same dyno on the same mode & it's only then that it's all relative. Thats the only way to see improvements or benefits from upgrades, not from shopping around until a dyno puts out the figure that are happy with or a figure that u are told that your car should have.

Jak

Well SAS know how to tune Aussie and Jap cars but German cars even that are factory and stock would die if they were put on the dyno at SAS its all about the injector setup in these German cars are complex that these guys have no idea

CBB have been dynoing themselves where they were taking cars. Dyno owners don't let you do the dyno work if they don't trust you. They know what they are doing.

I have had a lengthy conversation with the sales and technical people at Dyno Dyna^&% regarding this shootout mode in the past. The reason was that the 2wd chassis dyno I have been using for years had been sold and moved elsewhere. With the shootout mode in operation what this software asks is whether the vehicle is 2wd, 4wd, rotary or V8. This then assigns an inertial value depending on the vehicles engine size to the rollers to ensure that anyone with this shootout software is using a value that is locked into the software and can't be changed or got at. ie: a calibration value that is suppost to be correct across all Dyno Dyno Dyna’s. Those using dyno's without shootout mode (ie: myself) use an inertia value that is inputted into the dyno software before operation. This can be outputted from the dyno with the power & torque graph. This value could be increased or decreased by the operator for any reason but it is important to realise it was a variable that could be changed. The shootout software is only distributed to approved operators who are using the latest software and who are Dyno Dyna^& approved. Unfortunately I don't remember the criteria for approval whether it be a payment for the latest software, condition or age of the dyno I don't remember. But I hope this helps explain what shootout mode is, because I was confused as to its meaning or actual use. But it is indeed a standard Dyno Dyna^&% has introduced. Whether it works or not Im not qualified to say as I havent compared my vehicle on two different dyno's. But I am keen to place my vehicle on a dyno with shootout mode in operation and see what my power values are, because in the past my figures always seemed low compared to other quoted values from different vehicles of the same engine configurations.
I think Jak has hit the nail on the head though, I have written an article in Club Vee Dub Sydney's magazine about the topic of dyno comparisons. You basically use a dyno for development, interest & most impotantly benchmarking changes.

Hope this helps.
Cheers Leigh

Costa's Right, much more problems on the new stuff, traction control, bosch ME7.1 injection etc etc. Should be OK on the older stuff.

Dont understand why they use shootout mode, no - one ever explained that to me.

Last year we dynoed 19 cars our self.

Make sure they use the same settings for everyone!

Thanx guys for the explanation i originally dyno'd my car to see whether i got what i paid (and yes i did:kiss)

But i wasnt to impressed with shoot out mode as i couldnt compare my results with my mates

Hopefully we everythings cool at CBB :)

:beer

This is an interesting quote which i want show the guys at SAS by Guy as he knows his stuff

"I was speaking to a BMW mechanic the other day, and he said the interaction between Bosch & BMW was huge after they blew up the first 5 pre production E46 M3's, he tells me this was one of the crucial development features of ME7 was the sampling / adjustment rates enabling these engines to survive at previously unheard of mixture ratio's. A standard A3 or S3 will scare most dyno operators (who generally do Fords, Holdens, Nissan's & Subaru) "

Mick thats a silly comment, u are insinuating that CBB don't know how to dyno cars, who said they don't have the knowledge or experience that SAS do???

Matt, Penrith is a little far for me to come to dyno my car from the Central Coast, SAS are a little closer for me, thats the only reason I chose them in the first place.
But I would defianantly use a VW shops dyno.

I'll speak to Mike tomorrow and see what sort of numbers he'll need and when is good for him.

CBB will of course be dyno tuning from the day it arrives.

Costa, what sort of ECU were they trying to flog you? Was it an Autronic? They are not dodgy, thats why many V8 supercar teams use them, Larry Perkins wont build you a motor unless you agree to use an Autronic ECU.

Depending on dates, because I work 2 weekends in 3, I would like to come along.

It wasnt autronic, i think it was chiptorque or unichip, modern VW/Audi's dont work well with those crappy piggy back ECU's.

Thats why German company's like Oettinger or MTM spend millions of Deutsche marks on R&D on the tuning of these complex engines, so when they do tune them they dont sacrifice driveability for performance - my car feels like any other stock audi except it goes heaps harder ;)

for me information check out www.oettinger.com

OK. I spoke to Mike last night...

Here's the deal. If we can can get at least 10 cars. VW (and Audi) Only Dyno Day.

The price will be $35 per car. After everyone has had a run if you want to fiddle with your settings subsequent runs will be FREE!

Now you can't get better than that can you? A Dyno day with a Volkswagen Specialist for $35 and as long as everyone that comes has their run if you want another run you get it free!
