Under Dash Query

Does anyone know where this should be attached to under the dash? My speedo and clock light stopped working, is this related?

So I have to plug it into the back of the speedo. I tried but it didn't seem to want to fit...

Yes it's very related.

As Cam says thats the speedo back light bulb holder has fallen to bits.

They aren't fused either so if it touched anything metal it probably burned out the headlight switch rheostat.

this happened to me and the other half is still in the speedo.
see if you can pull it out (they are only pushed in) and you will see how they are supposed to fit together.
re crimp the edge with pliers and it will be fine to refit. at worst you may have blown a fuse when it sprung out and may have earthed out.

Once they fall apart like that they rarely go back together and stay together.

All air cooled VWs use those style holders, I did find some plastic holders through Hella or Narva many years back but they need an earth wire connected.
The metal ones ground through the speedo body.
