Exhaust system options for 1600 SP (1970 Kombi)


Hello everybody im planning to lower my very stock Kombi.It's a 1970 model with a stock 1600 SP motor.What i'm looking for is a exhaust that will tuck up nice and high and offer clearance and a decent exhaust note also.
I plan to keep the engine stock.
What are my options please?

Yep, Vintage Speed. That one is the header system that is available in 38, 42 and 48mm diameter primaries, there is a closer to stock style that uses your old heater box's if need be. For your stock engine, fiut the heater box version or the 38mm header style, either is available with that tucked outlet.

I do it cheaper...well a little ;). They fit well, are excellent for ground clearance, and to date, last very well, and I feel that by design, they should last indefinately. The stock VW or Porsche big can design is very strong compared to long individual runners. Especially in s/s that has a large coefficient of expansion.

shazzam, I like the one I bought. Been 7 months since fitting to a daily driver and the can has started to discolor and get spots of black (like a leopard). The pipe is still nice and shiny, I do polish it about every 2 weeks though.
Sound is good, performance , well I have nothing to judge it by so I will say good for now,fit was good but I had to do a few changes to the rear engine cradle to make it fit.
In all I'm happy after 7 months, about to swap it over to my DC build. I hope it lasts atleast 5 years :blush:

As good as this exhaust system looks...in reality its probably too much exhaust system for my ol' donk to pull off.
Thanks for the other link Mat,this option is probably a safer,more economical option....boring ha!
I'll wait and talk to Peter at Custom Veedub before i grab one.

Mines a mostly stock 1600 sp. I just wanted a really good exhaust that would last, sound sweet and help keep the motor cool. So I went with a vintage speed too.

The Vintage Speed muffler is absolutely fine on a stocker, as long as you buy the correct model, they are designed for stock application.

The one person/idiot that says they are too big needs to get his facts right BEFORE posting. (sorry Waltermitty, can't hide behind that avatar and get away with baseless comments)

Wish I could tell you . I'm happy with the look, but the motor isn't back in yet. I'm itching to start it up and hear it purr. I don't know of anyone who hasn't been happy with vintage speed.

RodZ bus is stock and i don't think he has any worries. I have a standard 1800 fitted with a VS on my bus and my bus runs good no dramas

And your 1600 in the beetle is stock heads with Kadrons, so if the exhaust was too big it would make the Kaddies run poorly

My comments were inresponce to yours, as you apparently failed to READ the original post, you posted an engine that appears far from stock.
The exhaust on it , would not be suitable for his stock 1500 sp in fact that exhaust wouldnt even fit ! it looks like a Type 4 exhaust to me.
Also READ my post again, I didn't say anything about that exhaust being "too big" as you claim I did? So who is the one making baseless comments and not checking the facts?.

You were more helpful in your later posting pointing out that VS are available in different specification and yes the correct VS would be fine on his engine, so would a stock exhaust as i first stated and it wouldnt cost $600.
I suggest you read everything before you shoot your mouth of and get YOUR facts right!

Awesome pic/crop/photoshop but that's more than 5 - 6 inches, to get this low your going to have to chassis notch and seat pan tub.

I wanted to go this low but took mine down as low as could without major mods..... it may come in the future thou.

Walter ...chill. You did state that it was too big in your opinion. I had already said that there are 4 different sizes of systems both when I posted the pic of the dual carb 1776 in the bus and then again in my second post. I had also already took into acount his small engine and I had all my facts right as opposed to you. I really don't need to defend myself or my post as it's all correct. Maybe the idiot reference was harsh, so I appologise it that offended you, but if you had actually had a problem with a VS system that was properly sized to your engine you wouldn't have posted because they work extremely well, 'when sized correctly to your specific requirement'.

The 'hide behind your avatar' comment was purely tongue in cheek badly timed joke. Your avatar has been the subject of many a discussion. Most can't even read your posts due to not being able to concentrate as your avatar draws your eyes like a demon ..... a very nice one at that.
