Fair question regarding budget but also fair point regarding cars available.

I kind-of keep a register of early RHD cars (I am pom, so at least my steering wheel is on the correct side). As far as RHD 'Oval era' Karmann Cabriolets are concerned (1953-57), we are talking about 15 surviving examples worldwide. Some of these are incomplete, on the wrong floor pan, chopped about etc. For early big window RHD Cabrios (1958-60), we are talking about a few more survivors worldwide. In the 20's, maybe into 30's.

These cars are seriously rare.

Maybe one day I will sell my 57k from new UK RHD '56

Both cool cars all depends on the need and the motivation to go through the import riggers

I find it interesting that people fell the need to pass comment about things that are not relevent to the post, it is obvious that the person who wants to purchase a early convertable already knows what it will cost, then go on to pass comment unnecessarly about him personally, see it all the time on this forum. good luck with the search and hope you find what you are after.

This 1954 Aussie delivered RHD cabrio was sold at The Classic Throttle Shop in Sydney a few years back, I remember trying to work out how to buy it but to no avail.... I think I recall the advertisement at the time said it was VW's Motor Show display vehicle for 1954/5??

Does anyone know where it ended up? It would certainly fit the bill for dubai!!

(Sorry about the photo size- straight from their website under 'Sold' cars)

Cheers

Went to a machinery & truck show at Wauchope (NSW) yesterday, and lo & behold, there was a 1954 RHD factory convertible. The bloke that owns it lives nearby near Johns River - I never even knew it was there. Didn't seem like he wanted to sell it though. :-)

Nice, shame they don't know how to spell Karmann and have butchered it by removing it original tail lights :(

Would the change of tail lights be because some low life are apt to removing the rarer ones?

If the tail lights were fitted straight that would be half way there, you could justify the tail light change if it was driven daily

Wow- it turned up, there you go!

Great example (minus the rear tailights and the indicators on the front guards which also shouldn't be there given it has semaphores), a real treasure.

Cheers

I have a 54 cabrio that has been in Oz since 1955. Was ordered via the UK by a Vic dealer for his wife, as the factory wouldn't supply them direct. Martin Fenner in the UK keeps the register of RHD Oval cabrio's. He had 14 on the register as of late last year. I am aware of 5 RHD Oval cabrio's in Australia, 2 of which I don't think are on Martins register.

I also have one of 14 or so 1961 cabrios that were the only official Karmann cabrio beetles imported into Australia for the 1961 Melbourne Motor show.

Cheers

Steve
